The Costa Blanca region stretches for some 200 kilometers along the Mediterranean coast of Spain. This is a popular Spanish tourist and holiday destination, but not quite as popular or built up as the well known Costa del Sol to the south. As a result, the region has much to offer those who like the beautiful countryside as well as the wonderful beaches and warm weather without all the commercialization and crowds of the southern areas. There are still tourist resorts, but there are also quiet Spanish villages, beautiful coastline and lots of things to keep anyone, young or old, busy.
As you travel south along the coast, the weather becomes hotter in the summer and milder in the winters. The Costa Blanca is in the middle of the Spanish Mediterranean coast, so it has a little more mild weather than the costas to the north and south, but there isn't too much difference. The days in the summer are hot and dry, while winter isn't ever really cold. It is an ideal place to set up a vacation or retirement home.
The Costa Blanca starts below Valencia around the town of Gandia and travels south along the coast through the resort town Benidorm, then Alicante and ends around Torrevieja. At the north end of the Costa Blanca are several small towns that are ideal for places to visit or have a house. Denia and Javea are smaller towns that make a nice retreat from the larger, more tourist oriented towns on the southern end of the region.
The town of Javea is located on a promontory with gorgeous beaches tucked into small bays. The town itself is really two towns in one - the seaside, harbour area and the old downtown in the Arenal area. Aduanas del Mar is the urban center developed around the harbour, where you will find plenty of restaurants and café bars spread around the port. To the north of town is the Montgó Natural Park (Les Planes). Here, you can the visit the historic windmills and get lovely views over the bay of Jávea. There is plenty of nature to explore with trails and lots of scenery in the park.
The beach resort of Calpe,a modern beach resort, is a bit farther down the coast. It has an attractive old quarter and the distinctive Gibraltar-style Peñon de Ifach rock which dominates the skyline for miles around. Altea is considered one of Costa Blanca's most beautiful towns with its medieval cobbled streets leading up to the blue-domed church. The plaza here has one of the best views on the Costa Blanca.
A bit further south is the quite town of Villajoyosa. The laast stop along this stretch of coastline is Torrevieja. This is an international tourist resort preferred by British and Scandinavians, and is quite popular with those who have decided to stay for good. Right in the middle of the region are the two major towns for tourists and those who work - the tourist capital of Benidorm and the regional capital of Alicante.
The largest resort in the region is Benidorm, with one of the highest concentrations of high rise hotels and condominium towers in all of Europe. There is the Terra Mitica theme park on the edge of town and several of the best beaches in Spain. The nightlife is also quite popular here, with many younger people out until all hours. The Balearic Islands are an easy ferry ride or short plane trip away, particularly the closest island of Ibiza.
Alicante is the regional capital and largest city on the Costa Blanca. It is also one of the fastest growing in the country, thanks in large part to tourism. The city has some 325,000 residents and 740,000 in the greater metro area. Many retirees from throughout Europe make this city and its surrounding area their home for much of the year. Alicante offers 7 kilometers of golden sand beach, a beautiful seafront esplanade, the Paseo de la Explanada, as well as superb shops and restaurants. The seafront esplanade was laid in 1957 and consists of more than six million small marble tiles that represent the colors of Alicante, which are red, cream and black.
There are plenty of golf courses and resorts along the whole Costa Blanca for those who like to enjoy the game. Near Javea is the Club de Golf Oliva Nova. The 18-hole course here was designed by Seve Ballesteros and is one of the most popular golf resorts in the country. The Club de Golf La Sella Denia course, also nearby, was designed by another famous Spaniard, golfer Jose Maria Olazabal. In Benidorm is the Real de Faula Benidorm golf course, designed by Nicklaus Design, and it is one of the best known courses on the Costa Blanca. Got to admit it - it's tough for this Californian to give up his car for the weekend, but that's exactly what we did on a recent train getaway to Santa Barbara that proved we could do our small part to help reduce traffic and vehicle emissions and still have a great time.
In fact, just put aside the benefits to the environment and look at the benefits to our own family: We saved on gas, vehicle wear and tear and on the frustration that always comes with a never-know-what-you're-gonna-get drive through the L.A. freeway system. We got to try a new adventure, introduce our 8-year-old to rail travel and we packed a lot of sightseeing into a short two-day period.
Santa Barbara is especially well suited to car-less travel because years ago city fathers decided they needed to do something to reduce the congestion they were seeing with many more visitors and the smog that would trap itself over the city. The Santa Barbara Car Free Project today offers travelers discounts on Amtrak as well as at participating hotels. They sweeten the pot by throwing in a multitude of discounts on local attractions and transportation. Our family of three decided to give it a try, traveling to Santa Barbara from our home in north San Diego County.
Boarding the 7 a.m. northbound Pacific Surfliner in Oceanside was a snap. Accustomed to long waits nowadays for air travel, we showed up nearly an hour before our train to check our one large piece of luggage. But A/ we really didn't need to check the luggage - there is a rack you can put your luggage on in the business class rail car - and B/ you can step right on the train, even purchasing your tickets onboard.
Business class is slightly more expensive but offers reserved seating and amenities such as a continental breakfast, a newspaper and a comfortable work area with a power outlet for our laptop. We went up the stairs to the second level, found our seating and sat back to enjoy the scenery. In just a couple of minutes we were on our way, the gorgeous California coastline passing before our very eyes.
We were reminded of a recent country chart-topper called Sunday Morning that talks about the many walks of life in the USA and how people spend their Sunday mornings. It was, in fact, Sunday morning and we were observing our fellow Californians out for their morning jog or enjoying a newspaper and coffee on their beachfront deck, or preparing an outdoor breakfast in one of several beachfront state parks along the Surfliner's path. The train sped along, often at 70 miles per hour or more, taking us on an adventurous route through many parts of the Southern California coastal region that we had not seen in our many drives along Interstate 5.
Another way to describe the feeling is to relate it to those "Over" shows - you know, the PBS television programs that are entirely made up of aerial views of life in a city or region. We were not quite as high up -- our window on the Surfliner must have been all of 15 feet off the ground - but it still had the same mesmerizing effect.
Our trip from Oceanside to Santa Barbara took about five hours but we noticed something quite curious. When driving that distance, we always are anxious to arrive. But on the Surfliner, we almost were sorry we had arrived. It was such great relaxation and interesting scenery that the journey was no longer a means to an end but part of the end itself. Our stress-relieving getaway weekend had started from the moment we had boarded the train.
Arriving in Santa Barbara, it was just a three-block walk to the Hotel Santa Barbara, one of the "car-free" participating hotels with a location in the heart of the city near sidewalk cafes and chic stores along State Street. We checked into our spacious and comfortable room by noon and were sitting at a sidewalk bistro just a few minutes later, enjoying some terrific people-watching and Panini sandwiches. In fact, we lingered a little too long over lunch and then did something we were trying not to do: we hired a taxi. It was the only way to get to the harbor in time to hop aboard the 43-foot sailboat, the Sunset Kidd, for a two-hour cruise along the Santa Barbara coastline.
The ocean provides the best, most panoramic view of Santa Barbara, its mountains and its beaches and offers convincing evidence that local tourism promoters were spot on when they named this part of the coast the "American Riviera." One can imagine such places as Monte Carlo or Cannes when you take in this spectacular overview along with the parade of luxurious yachts and young, beautiful people. Captain Dennis Longaberger prides himself on offering a true sailing experience rather than a tourist boat and says the Sunset Kidd is a rare example of a private sailboat that has been upgraded to carry passengers. The best part of this sail was watching two pods of dolphins frolic just a few yards from our boat.
Back from our sail, it was just footsteps to the Endless Summer bar-café, a perfectly located restaurant and watering hole named after the famous surf movie and offering gorgeous views of Santa Barbara's harbor area. Known for such specialties as its popcorn shrimp, fresh ahi and to-die-for Kaui Mud Pie, the restaurant enjoys a loyal following of both locals and visitors who keep coming back for more.
This first day set the tone for the entire trip - great restaurants, visits to such attractions as Stearns Wharf, the waterfront, the shops along State Street, the various parks, gardens and museums that all are either within walking distance of downtown or easily reached by the city's convenient public transportation. The Car Free Project offers a $2 discount off the Santa Barbara Trolley which, for $21, will let you ride the trolley all day to eight different area tourist attractions. (note: you can save $5 by purchasing your ticket online at www.sbtrolley.com). Another convenient way to get around the main part of town is the Electric Shuttle which runs up and down State Street as well as along the beach areas. It's just 25 cents each time you board.
If that's still not enough options for transportation, hybrid taxi service is 20 percent off for Car Free visitors, and there are plenty of local bike rentals.
We had a full day of sightseeing that second day because our train didn't depart until 7 p.m. We had done a lot in just two days, and the gentle journey home by Amtrak gave us the opportunity to truly sit back and relax - a far cry from our usual nail-biting trip home on those congested Southern California freeways.

Multi-directional currents make it a little challenging at times to swim and the Banyan Tree Resort will notify swimmers of dangerous conditions with flags. Anse Intendance is one of the spots that turtles still nest.

Cimitiere is a very hidden beach and is quite hidden. Monsoon season is from May to October and is a time of large waves and dangerous surf. California's Clear Lake offers unexpected beauty
Sometimes overlooked because of the state's spectacular Pacific coastline, California's fresh-water lakes offer plenty of getaway and vacation opportunities for the state's residents. One longtime favorite is Clear Lake, just a couple hours drive of the San Francisco Bay area.
A friend visited Clear Lake not too long ago and came back raving about the area's unexpected scenic and natural beauty - so we had to investigate. On a recent swing through Northern California, we dropped in on Clear Lake, staying at a small, unpretentious waterfront resort that brought back childhood memories of vacationing at lakefront resorts in Central Washington state. It was like vacationing in a simpler place at a simpler time.
At 43,000 acres, Clear Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in California, and some say it may be the oldest lake in North America. The lake is the centerpiece for several communities in the Lake County area, including Lakeport, Clearlake, Kelseyville, Glenhaven and several others. Taken together, these communities and several parks in the area offer a wide range of family vacation activities.
Chief among those are boating, fishing and swimming, three main reasons people stay at the Seabreeze Resort in Glenhaven, headquarters for our brief stay in the Clear Lake area. Owner Steve Nash happened on the resort many years ago as he was looking to buy a waterfront house. His accountant advised him that the income from the resort would go a long way toward helping to pay for his new waterfront home, and so Nash - who had never operated any sort of lodging facility - took the plunge.
Today, Nash divides his time between Clear Lake and San Diego, where he lives during winter months. But every year, April through October, it's back to Clear Lake and the round-the-clock chores of managing the resort. With only one housekeeper for help, Nash is up at dawn each day, working to well past sundown. But, as we discovered, he always finds time to chat and joke around with his guests - many of whom have been returning to the small resort for many years.
Since we were traveling with a four-year-old, we were booked into the "family wing" of the resort - some housekeeping units a little further from the water and from the guests in the waterfront adult wing. Our cottage was like a small apartment, maybe 1950s vintage, but nicely remodeled and cheerfully decorated. A full kitchen was included, as well as a living room, bath and a bedroom with two queen beds. Thankfully, on this summer visit, the unit was air conditioned.
Just outside our cottage was a grassy area, lounge chairs and several individual barbecues. Nearby was Steve's fragrant flower garden - which he obviously takes great care in maintaining - and then a few steps further was the boat launch, dock and swimming area. In short, the Seabreeze offered everything you need for a restful lakefront stay or a base of operations for your boating holiday.
But we were visiting Clear Lake to explore. Just why was everyone raving about this lake?
The first thing we discovered was that, as advertised, the lake and its surroundings are beautiful. The blue-water lake is in the middle of a hilly, mostly treed landscape that is especially interesting when approaching from the east. We also noticed that this lake is big. On the map it looked like it would be fairly easy to circumnavigate since there were highways, roadways and towns and villages on almost every part of the lake. Once we were driving, however, it soon became apparent our trip around the lake was going to take us at least a half day.
Along the way we stopped in several little lakeside towns, including the largest city, Clearlake, which is the largest population center in a region that only has about 12,000 year-round residents. Each town is different, but all share the beauty of Clear Lake and recreation opportunities are never far away.
Along most shores of the lake you'll find a combination of private residences and small motels and inns like the Seabreeze. We did note, however, there is a large timeshare resort on the northwest shore, as well as the famous Konocti Harbor Resort and Spa, known for bringing headline musical acts in for performances in the Outdoor Konocti Field Amphitheater as well as the resort's indoor showroom. Altogether, the resort puts on about 100 shows per year.
We noticed that parks are abundant throughout the region. Many are located on the more than 100 miles of shoreline but, in addition to camping and watersports, several parks offer other features. For example, the Anderson Marsh State Park is known for nature walks and birdwatching, while the Middletown Trailside Nature Preserve offers the "EcoArts Lake County Scupture Walk" conducted on 107 acres of natural park. The area's history is highlighted at the Anderson Marsh State Historic Park.
There are plenty of other opportunities to learn about the history of Clear Lake, including two county museums, the Lake County Museum in Lakeport and the Lower Lake Historical Schoolhouse Museum in Lower Lake. Learn about the stars at the Taylor Planetarium and Observatory in Kelseyville.
For those who enjoy visiting wineries, this region has several that are all within easy driving distance of the lake.
No matter which shoreline, there seemed to be plenty of anglers taking advantage of what the locals say is the best bass fishing in the West. The bass fishing is so good that several professional bass fishing organizations have designated Clear Lake as the best bass lake in the country. But it's not just bass -- catfish, blackfish, Sacramento perch, hitch, crappie and bluegill are all caught at Clear Lake.
We didn't sample the fishing, but we did enjoy swimming near the dock at the Seabreeze and firing up the barbecue right outside of our cottage. Our midweek visit was quiet and restful - and like a step back into the days of Ward and June Cleaver when family vacations just seemed a lot simpler.

A Quick Tour Of Italy - The Romagna Subregion
If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. It may be the only region of Italy named for a road, one constructed by the Ancient Romans almost 2200 years ago. This article describes the Romagna subregion, a bit of its history, its many tourist attractions, local food, and local wine. A companion article presents Emilia, the inland western "half" of the region that borders the Lombardy, Liguria, and Tuscany regions of Italy.
Our Romagna tour follows the highway from east to west, going slightly southward along the way. Start by visiting Rocca Sforzesca (Sforza Castle) in the village of Dozza whose wine shop, Enoteco Regionale, has a great collection of local wines. Formula One auto racing fans will want to visit the town of Imola in mid-April. Other attractions include shopping for fancy ceramics and eating at San Domenico's, a world-class restaurant with a three thousand item wine list.
Pottery fanciers will enjoy the city of Faenza, a center for faience pottery since the Twelfth Century. Guess what's on display at the Museo delle Ceramiche. If you like spas be sure to visit the neighboring city of Bagno di Romagna with its hot springs.
Ravenna, north of the highway, was once the capital of the Roman Empire. Check out the Basilica di San Vitale (Church of Saint Vitale) with its famous mosaics. If you are in the mood you can visit a historic mausoleum and the tomb of that great Italian poet Dante. For some reason Ravenna has many sites with historic mosaics.
Rimini on the Adriatic coast is a major European holiday destination, and is quite crowded during the high season. Its Grand Hotel was featured in Fellini's 1973 movie Amaracord.
Perhaps it is no accident that the founder of Italian cuisine Pellegrino Artusi was born in this region. It is the home of Albana di Romagna DOCG, Italy's first white DOCG wine. The G stands for Garantita. Apulia forms the heel of the Italian boot. It is situated in the southeast corner of Italy and borders the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Apulia was frequently invaded by both the ancient Greeks and Romans. It was ruled by many including the Byzantines, Goths, Lombards, Normans, Spaniards, and Turks. Apulia's moment of greatest glory was in the Holy Roman Empire during the 13th Century, when majestic Romanesque cathedrals and palaces were built. This article presents the eastern and usually southern part of Apulia. A companion article presents the rest of the region including the administrative center of Bari, the largest city in southern Italy.
Trulli are truly remarkable. They are human habitations in the shape of beehives with a hole in the top to let the smoke escape. To me they resemble giant limestone teepees. They can be found in only one place in the world, and that is eastern Apulia. The road that connects the touristy city of Alberobello and the historic town of Martina Franca with its baroque and medieval architecture is dotted with trulli. Some of them have been transformed into wineries, hardly surprising given the local vineyards.
The small town of Castellana is known for the nearby caves; Grotte di Castellana belongs to the largest network of caves in all Italy. The port of Brindisi is only a ferry ride away from Greece. You should stop by to see some historic churches, the Duomo (Cathedral), and a Roman column dating back to the Second Century.
Lecce is often called "the Florence of the south." Its architecture is mainly baroque. Make sure to see its historic churches and the remains of a huge Roman Amphitheatre.
Otranto is the easternmost city in all of Italy. It was already a major port in the days of the ancient Greeks. Some city walls are still standing. Make sure that you visit the Spanish Castello (Castle) and the Norman Catedrale (Cathedral). Then take the coastal road to Leuca with its lighthouse and marina.
Apulia's classified foods include two Cheeses, Clementines, Olives, and four Olive Oils.
