Brant County Museum
The Brant County Museum showcases the history both of Brantford and of all of Brant County. People, places and events which have shaped the area are showcased in its exhibits. It is run by the Brant Historical Society, which in 2008 celebrated its 100th anniversary. There are two locations for the Brant County Museum in Brantford: one on Charlotte Street and the other on the square. Admission to the Museum in the Square is always free.
Personal Computer Museum
Founded by local computer whiz Syd Bolton, the Personal Computer Museum is dedicated to the history of computers. The museum houses over 300 machines, with over 45 interactive displays where you can actually get hands on experience with computers from days past. Some of the machines included in interactive displays are IBM, Commodore, Apple, Atari and more. The museum is only open for special events or by private appointment. Canadian Military Heritage Museum
Over the years many persons from Brant County and the surrounding area have contributed to Canada's military heritage. The Canadian Military Heritage Museum was founded to honour these brave men and women. The museum houses over 10,000 artifacts spanning a history from the Loyalist Era all the way up to modern times. Some of its artifacts include weapons, uniforms, ceremonial objects, manuscripts and more.
Bell Homestead National Historic Site
The family home of Alexander Graham Bell in Brantford has been restored to appear as it did in the 1870's. It was in this home in 1874 in which Bell first came up with the idea for the telephone. After that he spent several summers working on the telephone project in his laboratory right here on the homestead. Staff where authentic 19th century period costumes for tours, providing a realistic experience not only of what it was like for Alexander Graham Bell as he was inventing the telephone, but of life in general during the 1870's.
Woodland Cultural Centre
The Woodland Cultural Centre, located on the Six Nations Reserve at Brantford, Ontario, is dedicated to teaching the history and culture of First Nations. Its member nations include the Wahta Mohawks, Six Nations of the Grand River and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. It houses over 35,000 artifacts spanning a timeline from the prehistory of the Iroquoian and Algonkian people to the modern day.
Myrtleville House
Originally built in 1831 by Allen and Eliza Good of Ireland, the Myrtleville House in Brantford reflects the life of early 19th century Canada, along with even older artifacts from their Irish home. Over the years the Goods came to be a prominent family in Brantford life, with over 600 acres of land and doing much to benefit the community. Their family home now stands as a monument to this important era of Canadian and Brantford history.

However, culture seekers and shoppers are equally well provided for, and Munich's museums are amongst the world's finest, including the splendid Nymphenburg Palace, which is not to be missed.

California resort has Mexican beach feel
For those who've tried them, Mexican beach resorts are among the most relaxing vacations or getaways one can imagine — long stretches of beach, palm trees, a cerveza or margarita never far from one's grasp. It's easy to drift along like some white fluffy cloud with your only worry being when the next drink server will come along.
But not many folks can afford to do this very often.Today's air fare is a little higher than in past years so these aren't exactly cheap vacations. And it's hardly worth going to Mexico unless you can stay a week -- who has a week anymore to just sit and do nothing?
The answer is to find a similar resort that's a little closer and, when you eliminate your airfare, a little cheaper. You need to find someplace where you can just hop in your car and drive a few hours, stay two or three days, and get back home just as refreshed as if you'd been to the Mexican Riviera.
You need to check out the Embassy Suites Hotel Mandalay Beach Resort in, of all places, Oxnard, California. This is a California vacation that feels like you're in the heart of Mexico.
Before we visited the Mandalay Beach Resort, my only recollection of Oxnard was a time when I was 19 years old driving through California with a buddy, eating cans of tuna fish to save money and looking for a place to crash that was just as cheap as cheap could get. We found just such a place in Oxnard, but were too scared of our surroundings to get to sleep.
Fast forward to Oxnard of the New Millennium and, while its tourism infrastructure is not quite complete, the area is fast becoming a popular destination for people who enjoy California beach vacations. About an hour's drive northwest of Los Angeles, the area is close enough to major population areas to be accessible, yet undeveloped enough to feel like you're really getting away from the rat race.
Positioned on some of the best real estate in the Oxnard area, the Mandalay Beach Resort is everything that the Oxnard visitor industry wants to be — it's a waterfront playground that has style, lots of amenities, plenty of wide-open spaces and a wide beach that stretches for miles. And, yes, it has plenty of Mexican beer and margaritas.
Traveling Highway 101 northwest from Los Angeles, you'd never imagine that this resort area was just a few miles off the freeway. The urban sprawl along the freeway is not particularly attractive and most people headed north know that an especially spectacular beachside city of Santa Barbara is just another half hour ahead. So it's no wonder that people just don't think of Oxnard when they think vacation paradise.
But if you take the Victoria Avenue exit and travel across several miles of agricultural fields, you will come to the Mandalay Beach area, one of many beaches along this part of the coast. The Mandalay Bay Resort with its attractive early California Spanish design, is a large complex of several buildings that include 248 suites in all. Tropical plants, giant palm trees of every variety and a series of waterfalls give the resort a feeling similar to many beachside resorts we have visited in places like Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Cozumel. An inviting pool is the centerpiece for the courtyard while the resort's restaurant and bar areas are nearby.
We immediately explored the grounds and found our way out to the many paved walking and bike paths that traverse the beach. Parked near the resort's beach entrance were several peddle-cars and bicycles that, as far as we could tell, were getting rented quite frequently by the many families who were staying at the resort.
The beach itself was one of the most inviting we've seenin Southern California. The resort looks out onto an area of sand dunes and, beyond that, the broad beach. Off in the distance we saw the Channel Islands, an easy boat trip from nearby Channel Islands Harbor. Once out to the beach, we noticed that there was plenty of walking -- both north and south -- and, even though this was a warm summer Sunday, not a lot of people compared with other Southern California beaches.
A little bit north of the resort is the Mandalay Beach at Oxnard Park with its sweeping lawns and outdoor facilities. Further south is Hollywood Beach, which was the location for a movie called The Sheik starring Rudolph Valentino. Filmed in 1924, the movie needed a location with an Arabian feel and this part of the coast was deemed to have it.
Back at the resort, we settled in for some serious poolside sun tanning and could see that the guests were a mixture of couples and families who seemed typical of the crowd you would find at any Mexican beach resort. For all intents and purposes this was Mexico — just a kinder, gentler version in which you have no worries about the water, the food or the airfare.
The suites at the Mandalay are spacious and comfortable. Our "king suite" had a king bed in one room and sofa-bed in the other room. The unit was apartment-like with a refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave and wet bar — although you won't need a kitchen for breakfast because a big one is offered free for all guests. Our suite opened out to the beach and had a separate table and chairs on the patio with a nearby lawn area.
California beach vacations can include much more than sitting on the beach, and the Mandalay is no exception. There is plenty todo in the Oxnard area including many beach and ocean activities. You can take a trip out to the Channel Islands National Park — either half or full day excursions are offered. Kayaks, paddle boats and motor boats are available for rent. Or, if you just enjoy being around boats, visit the spectacular Channel Islands Harbor, home to 2,600 boat slips, a maritime museum, three shopping centers and some waterside restaurants.
Not far from Oxnard, Ventura and Santa Barbara are great day trips that are quick and easy to reach by car. About a half-hour drive east from the resort is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, which we made a point to visit in Simi Valley. The death of Reagan and the resulting publicity apparently has created even more interest in Reagan and this fascinating collection of artifacts, photos and records help us to learn more about our former president.
Located on a magnificent piece of land overlooking the Simi Valley, the Reagan Library is well organized and includes interesting bits of memorabilia at every turn. Outside the library is a piece of the Berlin Wall, as well as Reagan's final resting place. Inside are clothing, jewelry, desks, private papers — just about anything you can imagine — taken from various points of Reagan's life. Photos help us to remember how it was — for example, when you see a dress worn by Nancy Reagan, you also will see a photo of her wearing that dress. Especially interesting was the full-scale replica of the Oval Office — which gives you a real sense of what that room feels like, and how large it is.

For those who've tried them, Mexican beach resorts are among the most relaxing vacations or getaways one can imagine — long stretches of beach, palm trees, a cerveza or margarita never far from one's grasp. It's easy to drift along like some white fluffy cloud with your only worry being when the next drink server will come along.
But not many folks can afford to do this very often.Today's air fare is a little higher than in past years so these aren't exactly cheap vacations. And it's hardly worth going to Mexico unless you can stay a week -- who has a week anymore to just sit and do nothing?
The answer is to find a similar resort that's a little closer and, when you eliminate your airfare, a little cheaper. You need to find someplace where you can just hop in your car and drive a few hours, stay two or three days, and get back home just as refreshed as if you'd been to the Mexican Riviera.
You need to check out the Embassy Suites Hotel Mandalay Beach Resort in, of all places, Oxnard, California. This is a California vacation that feels like you're in the heart of Mexico.
Before we visited the Mandalay Beach Resort, my only recollection of Oxnard was a time when I was 19 years old driving through California with a buddy, eating cans of tuna fish to save money and looking for a place to crash that was just as cheap as cheap could get. We found just such a place in Oxnard, but were too scared of our surroundings to get to sleep.
Fast forward to Oxnard of the New Millennium and, while its tourism infrastructure is not quite complete, the area is fast becoming a popular destination for people who enjoy California beach vacations. About an hour's drive northwest of Los Angeles, the area is close enough to major population areas to be accessible, yet undeveloped enough to feel like you're really getting away from the rat race.
Positioned on some of the best real estate in the Oxnard area, the Mandalay Beach Resort is everything that the Oxnard visitor industry wants to be — it's a waterfront playground that has style, lots of amenities, plenty of wide-open spaces and a wide beach that stretches for miles. And, yes, it has plenty of Mexican beer and margaritas.
Traveling Highway 101 northwest from Los Angeles, you'd never imagine that this resort area was just a few miles off the freeway. The urban sprawl along the freeway is not particularly attractive and most people headed north know that an especially spectacular beachside city of Santa Barbara is just another half hour ahead. So it's no wonder that people just don't think of Oxnard when they think vacation paradise.
But if you take the Victoria Avenue exit and travel across several miles of agricultural fields, you will come to the Mandalay Beach area, one of many beaches along this part of the coast. The Mandalay Bay Resort with its attractive early California Spanish design, is a large complex of several buildings that include 248 suites in all. Tropical plants, giant palm trees of every variety and a series of waterfalls give the resort a feeling similar to many beachside resorts we have visited in places like Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Cozumel. An inviting pool is the centerpiece for the courtyard while the resort's restaurant and bar areas are nearby.
We immediately explored the grounds and found our way out to the many paved walking and bike paths that traverse the beach. Parked near the resort's beach entrance were several peddle-cars and bicycles that, as far as we could tell, were getting rented quite frequently by the many families who were staying at the resort.
The beach itself was one of the most inviting we've seenin Southern California. The resort looks out onto an area of sand dunes and, beyond that, the broad beach. Off in the distance we saw the Channel Islands, an easy boat trip from nearby Channel Islands Harbor. Once out to the beach, we noticed that there was plenty of walking -- both north and south -- and, even though this was a warm summer Sunday, not a lot of people compared with other Southern California beaches.
A little bit north of the resort is the Mandalay Beach at Oxnard Park with its sweeping lawns and outdoor facilities. Further south is Hollywood Beach, which was the location for a movie called The Sheik starring Rudolph Valentino. Filmed in 1924, the movie needed a location with an Arabian feel and this part of the coast was deemed to have it.
Back at the resort, we settled in for some serious poolside sun tanning and could see that the guests were a mixture of couples and families who seemed typical of the crowd you would find at any Mexican beach resort. For all intents and purposes this was Mexico — just a kinder, gentler version in which you have no worries about the water, the food or the airfare.
The suites at the Mandalay are spacious and comfortable. Our "king suite" had a king bed in one room and sofa-bed in the other room. The unit was apartment-like with a refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave and wet bar — although you won't need a kitchen for breakfast because a big one is offered free for all guests. Our suite opened out to the beach and had a separate table and chairs on the patio with a nearby lawn area.
California beach vacations can include much more than sitting on the beach, and the Mandalay is no exception. There is plenty todo in the Oxnard area including many beach and ocean activities. You can take a trip out to the Channel Islands National Park — either half or full day excursions are offered. Kayaks, paddle boats and motor boats are available for rent. Or, if you just enjoy being around boats, visit the spectacular Channel Islands Harbor, home to 2,600 boat slips, a maritime museum, three shopping centers and some waterside restaurants.
Not far from Oxnard, Ventura and Santa Barbara are great day trips that are quick and easy to reach by car. About a half-hour drive east from the resort is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, which we made a point to visit in Simi Valley. The death of Reagan and the resulting publicity apparently has created even more interest in Reagan and this fascinating collection of artifacts, photos and records help us to learn more about our former president.
Located on a magnificent piece of land overlooking the Simi Valley, the Reagan Library is well organized and includes interesting bits of memorabilia at every turn. Outside the library is a piece of the Berlin Wall, as well as Reagan's final resting place. Inside are clothing, jewelry, desks, private papers — just about anything you can imagine — taken from various points of Reagan's life. Photos help us to remember how it was — for example, when you see a dress worn by Nancy Reagan, you also will see a photo of her wearing that dress. Especially interesting was the full-scale replica of the Oval Office — which gives you a real sense of what that room feels like, and how large it is.

Rome may be Italy's political capital, but Milan is the country's cultural and financial capital. In short, Milan is a dynamic city that is to Italy what New York is to the US. And like New York, it's a culinary hotbed, attracting much of the best talent from throughout the Peninsula and beyond. This may be good for those with a taste for the exotic and innovative. It's less good for the traditional cuisine, which often gets taken for granted by the newest chefs. Luckily for travelers hoping for a more authentic taste of Italy, however, Milan is currently touting its own traditional cuisine as the new black.
Traditional Milanese cuisine has its own distinctive flavor and many travelers may be surprised by how the northern regions of Italy fail to live up to their expectations of Italian food. Olive oil is less frequently used in cooking than butter while pasta is passed over in favor of rice or 'polenta'. Luckily enough, the initial surprise is soon to be replace by a inner sense of satisfaction as the local dishes of Milan and Lombardy, when prepared well, can make for some wonderful eating experiences.
A typical Milanese meal may start with a traditional antipasto, made of 'nervetti' (boiled calf shank and knee cartilage cut into strips) and mixed with thinly sliced onions. As a first course you cannot miss the classical 'Risotto alla Milanese', made with a full-bodied beef broth (the original recipe includes bone marrow) and flavored with saffron. As a second course, a classic Milanese dish is 'cassoeula', an extremely filling dish made with various parts of pork meat (tail, ribs, rind, feet and ears) cooked with green cabbage and other vegetables. If you are not feeling so courageous, go for a Milanese cutlet that is probably nothing like you've ever tasted in other places: Milan restaurants actually serve a very tasty, crunchy cutlet, made with a veal chop, including the bone. If you are lucky enough to be in Milan during the holiday season, you could end your meal with a huge slice of 'Panettone', the typical local Christmas cake, that is even tastier if you eat it with traditional Mascarpone cream.
Even though the Italian riviera is a hundred miles away, Milan has a well-deserved reputation for offering the freshest fish in Italy. 'Branzino' (sea bass, known elsewhere as 'spigola') and 'orata' (gilthead) are the most common offerings, but you can also find 'San Pietro' (John Dory) and 'dentice' (seabream). 'Scampi' and lobsters are plentiful here, too, and an antipasto of turteaux (Normandy crab), rare on Italian menus, can be found easily as well. If you like seafood, however, be advised as a seafood dinner in a proper place may cost you an arm and a leg. If you are looking for something more typical and cheaper, head for the city surroundings where you may find plenty of places serving freshwater fish and even a number of frog based dishes, starting from the unfailing 'risotto'.
Milan is an important business centre, so expect all of the restaurants in the centre to be very expensive. An average complete dinner costs around 35 Euro per person. Prices are only slightly lower in pizzerias. In order to have a cheap, non-fast-food dinner, join the young Milanese crowd storming local pubs every night for Happy Hour.. Between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm, for 5 to 8 Euro you can have a drink and enjoy an open buffet with a large variety of food. The higher density of such places can be found in corso di Porta Ticinese, Corso Como, Brera, Isola and the 'Navigli' area.
Despite the steady flow of foreign businessmen, the city's restaurateurs are not waiting to fleece the occasional guest. There are not the usual tourist traps you may find in other Italian cities. Also, contrary to popular belief, do not take for granted that the hotel where you stay is not a great place to eat either. As a matter of fact, many hotels in Milan have excellent restaurants run by some of the city best chefs. If you are not confident about your choice, take a look at the menu before entering a place. Be careful if you see an overuse of salmon, arugula and 'carpaccio' (thinly sliced raw beef or fish) as this is is a common sign of the uniformity affecting many mid level restaurants.
Not all products of Milan can be found in restaurants, so a little food shopping may be in order before leaving. If you ask a local where to buy some specialty food, chances are you wull be directed to Peck, a fancy grocery store laid out on four elegant floors not far fron the Duomo. Here you will find a stunning wine cellar and at least 25 local variations on salami including the thin 'luganega' and 'zampone' (a pig's foot stuffed with peppery, coarsely ground pork meat). In late fall and winter, you will also find a very special treat: a terrine layered with four creemy cheeses (gorgonzola, mascarpone, stracchino and taleggio) and slivers of aromatic white truffles.

A Quick Tour Of Italy - The Trentino Subregion
If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy on the border of both Switzerland and Austria. Among its tourist attractions are the Dolomite Mountains, that the famous architect Le Corbusier called "The most beautiful work of architecture even seen," glacier lakes, and Alpine forests. In fact the region is composed of two parts, Trentino in the south and Alto Adige in the north. This article presents Trentino; a companion article presents Alto Adige.
The medieval city of Rovereto, population about 35 thousand, has had its share of warfare. In 1796 Napoleon won a bloody battle against Austria. In World War I Italian and Austrian troops fought a bloody, inconclusive battle. The Italian Historical War Museum was founded after World War I to commemorate the war and to prevent future wars. Located in a medieval castle, it is perhaps the world's largest anti-war museum.
Trento, population about one hundred thousand if you add in the suburbs, is Trentino's major city. It hosted the Council of Trent stretching from 1545 to 1563 that marked the beginning of the Counter-Reformation. The Duomo (Cathedral of San Virgilio) is a Twelfth-Thirteenth Century Romanesque-Gothic structure built over a Sixth Century Church dedicated to the city's patron saint, San Virgilio. The Sixteenth Century Renaissance Santa Maria Maggiore Church hosted many sessions of the Council of Trent. The Castle of Good Counsel started in the Thirteenth Century next to the city walls. This castle includes the Provincial Art Museum.
Madonna di Campiglio advertises itself as Italy's number one ski resort. The clientele is mostly Italian and the slopes tend to be intermediate, but there are slopes for beginners and experts as well. You can go to the city center and back without ever removing your skis. For a change of pace, visit the nearby Adamello-Brenta Natural Park encompassing 450 kilometers (300 miles) of mountain paths.
In Trentino cuisine takes on an Alpine accent and includes plenty of butter, cheese, game, and wild mushrooms, dozens of which can be found in local markets. The nearly three hundred lakes and rivers furnish plenty of fish. The most recent Trento-Alto Adige wine that I tasted was a Vino Novello (New Wine) not typical of Trento-Alto Adige wine but typical of Vino Novello wine. The less said the better. There actually is a wine called Pinot Grigio Trentino Concilio (Pinot Gris Council of Trent) but I haven't tasted it.
Levi Reiss has authored alone or with a co-author ten computer and Internet books, but to tell the truth, he would really rather just drink fine French, German, or other wine, accompanied by the right foods. But that's not the only reason why Lundy Island is a unique place. Visitors tend to return for its clear seas, spectacular landscape and clarity of the night sky, a vision which remains unobscured by city and street lights.

Whether you are bird spotting - puffins, without doubt being the most popular species to see - or whether you wish to see basking sharks, seals, the Lundy pony or even corals and seaweeds, then Lundy is where you're going to see them.
Lundy Island offers the visitor a variety of accommodation in which to stay - 23 properties in total - including a 13th century castle, a late Georgian gentleman's villa, a fisherman's chalet and even a lighthouse. There is also a campsite at the southern end of the island.
Most of the island's buildings have been built from the local, lightly-coloured granite, and many have been adapted from previous use, or made from stone reclaimed from redundant buildings. All properties offer heating: some have open fires as well. There are baths or showers with running hot and cold water, mains drainage, and gas and electricity. To ensure you need bring a minimum of equipment, most properties offer sheets, pillowcases and towels on a per person rate in the price of all property rentals. And most unusually, each building comes with a library of relevant reference books.
You can travel to Lundy either by scheduled steamer (April to October only), a journey of approximately two hours, from Bideford and Ilfracombe, or by helicopter or light aircraft from Hartland Point.

History buffs love California's Columbia State Park
History buffs could hardly do better than a visit to California's Gold Country in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada where gold was discovered in the mid-19th Century, setting off a population explosion that helped shape what California is today. And maybe the best place to get a sense of what it all was like back then is Columbia State Historic Park, hailed as the state's best preserved ghost town.
Actually, Columbia is far from a ghost town. Several local business owners are alive and well, thank you, operating park concessions that help re-create the feeling of a town in the Gold Rush era. On any given day you'll find people all over town dressed like it was still the 1800's and doing all they can to create the illusion that you are traveling back in time.
Columbia's Main Street does look like a movie set except that the downtown stores are not just storefronts but actual historical buildings. There are about 40 brick buildings and 10 wooden structures all built back in the day when thousands of miners would come into town to get their supplies before returning to gold claims that ultimately produced $67 million worth of gold between 1850 and 1870. That may not be impressive using today's price of gold, but when you consider that gold sold back then for just $20 an ounce, you start to realize that this area's gold production was massive.
Columbia got its start in 1850 when a group of prospectors were caught in a rain storm and, while drying out their gear, John Walker - no, not that John Walker - decided to look for gold. He found so much that, within six weeks, thousands of miners had descended on the area in search of their fortunes. By 1852, more than 150 stores, shops, saloons and other businesses were operating in Columbia. By 1853, as many as 30,000 people lived there.
Once mining had run its course, the town's buildings deteriorated to the point that, in 1945, the state stepped in and began restoration efforts. Columbia became a state historic park and now includes the largest single collection of California gold rush-era structures.
There are about 20 businesses and 20 static history displays that visitors can peruse on their visit to Columbia. Among the businesses are such authentic enterprises as an Old West hotel, blacksmith shop, a couple of cowboy-style saloons, an ice cream parlour, a mercantile and a dry goods store. There's a bank, a firehouse, a couple of candy stores, a barbershop, bookstore and then various exhibits that explain some of the historical buildings and how they were used. Especially enlightening is the museum, where an excellent collection of historical items are on display.
There's another museum of sorts at Columbia Booksellers and Stationers, where we chatted with proprietor Floyd D. P. Oydegaard, a bearded gent who dresses in period clothing and just happens to look like someone who might have fought in the Civil War. That's no coincidence because Oydegaard's store is chock-full of Civil War memorabilia as well as other antiques and museum-quality items from the 19th Century.
"I want people to feel like they've walked into a museum," Oydegaard explained. "I don't have any room in my house so my wife says take it down to the store."
Oydegaard has studied up on Columbia history and points out that the city became quite a melting pot following the discovery of gold. Many of the town's residents were from other countries and there were more than 1,000 Chinese living in Columbia within two years of the discovery.
After spending an enjoyable afternoon exploring the town, we took it one step further: we stayed the night. Many may not be aware that the City Hotel (along with the Fallon Hotel) offers overnight accommodations in a historic hotel that operates as a bed-and-breakfast inn. If you enjoy watching Westerns on TV or at the movies, the City Hotel is like stepping into one of those Old West hotels.
The City Hotel is quite ornate with a lot of attention to period furnishings. The hotel is full of antiques 'in the lobby, in the bedrooms, in the upstairs sitting area, everywhere you look. Oriental rugs cover shiny dark wooden floors, and elaborate loveseats, carved desks and hefty bureaus are used to add décor and historical flavor to the hotel's interior. High-ceiling rooms are probably much as they were back in the day, each with a small bathroom area with showers down the hall. The rooms have a bit of that "grandmother's house" feel with colorful wall papers and antique beds that feature six-foot-high mahogany headboards. A couple of the rooms open out to verandahs overlooking Main Street.
We were in the mood for just a quick snack for dinner so instead of visiting the City Hotel's elegant dining room, we stopped in next door at the What Cheer Saloon, another elaborately decorated area that seems completely authentic to the 1800's. The surprising thing was that much of the dining room's menu was available at the saloon - which, it turned out, was fortunate. Otherwise we would have missed some really expertly prepared meals that seemed so much better than we expected to get in a state park.
On the way out of town the next day we stopped in nearby Sonora, perhaps the most scenic town in the area. Sonora has a long main street of western storefronts with plenty of nearby historic homes, not to mention a couple of spectacular church steeples that make it great for taking pictures. Sonora has numerous antique shops, as well as small, but interesting shops and restaurants.
Nearby is Railtown 1897 or what they call "The Movie Railroad." It's located in Jamestown and is a fascinating stop for anyone who has enjoyed Western movies with those loud and powerful steam trains. If you saw a movie with an old-time steam train, chances are the engine and cars came from Railtown 1897, where there is a wall of movie posters illustrating just how many movies featured the trains kept here at this facility. The facility actually is the former Sierra Railway shops and headquarters.
Historic trains and steam engines are on tracks throughout the property and visitors can take their time following sidewalk trails to various parts of the facility. You can walk right up and look inside the roundhouse where several engines are under repair.
There are plenty of movie stars at Railtown 1897. For example, Locomotive No. 3 has appeared in nearly 50 motion pictures and more than 20 television series, and is still used in the movies today. Most recent use includes the movies Back to the Future III, Unforgiven and Bad Girls. Many of the passenger coaches and cabooses you see also were used in various films. Just as an aside, Railtown 1897 is operated by the state along with the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, one of the country's best railroad museums. That 100,000-square-foot museum features many actual railcars as well as various real locomotives. A train station replica allows you to see what a 19th Century station was like and, in spring and summer months, the museum offers steam train rides.

Its Historic Center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We certainly can't say that Naples is undiscovered. But it is definitely less tourist infested than many, many other Italian cites. Greek colonists founded Neopolis between the Seventh and Sixth Centuries B. C. Over the centuries this city was dominated by nearly a dozen nationalities. Naples was once the third largest city in Europe and a major cultural center. Unlike northern Italy cities Naples has few immigrants. Unemployment remains high. The Sicilian-based Mafia is not very present, but the local Camorra is. Watch yourself and your belongings in this fascinating city.
Naples is home to many miles of subterranean Greco-Roman reservoirs and tunnels, some of which are available for visiting. Much of Naples is constructed from stone removed during tunnel excavation. During World War II underground Naples served as air raid shelters whose walls display legible graffiti more than sixty years later.
The Castel Nuovo (New Castle) was first built by the Angevins in the Thirteenth Century. It includes numerous frescoes from the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries. The moat surrounding the castle once contained a crocodile that devoured prisoners. The crocodile was killed and stuffed, and hung above a castle doorway where it remained until the mid-19th Century.
The Seventeenth Century Royal Palace was home to Napoleon's youngest sister and her husband, the King of Naples. See the royal apartments to get a look at real luxury. Next door to the palace is Naples's largest square, the Plebiscite Plaza whose highlight is the San Francesco di Paola, which resembles the Pantheon in Rome.

Hiking the entire 2,167 miles of the Appalachian Trail is too daunting for most folks to seriously consider, but plenty use a ROAD TRIP PLANNER to create a car or RV road trip. Nestled in the base of Mexico, situated in the state of Quintana Roo and lying on the coast is the flourishing tourism city of Cancun with a population of some 600, 000. You will find traditional foods to sample at a reasonably low cost, take your pick from the available bars, restaurants and local eateries. Bull fights put on daily show for your excitement and entertainment, and you will find less expensive shopping available to you in the older part of town.
Across the Yucatan peninsula you can explore and learn firsthand information regarding the ancient Mayan civilization and culture that once thrived here so long ago. The ruins of El Ray are located within the Hotel Zone with El Meco; a much more substantial site to be found on the mainland just outside the city limits on the road to Punta Sam. While just to the north of the city a more larger and interesting site exists for exploration the lives of these amazing people. If you are interested in day tripping, the lost city of Uxmal is recommended or perhaps even Xel-Ha.
Incorporated in the natural reserves are Xel_Ha and Xcaret, these are probably the most visited sites for tourists. Here you can explore and take in the natural sites while taking advantage of the available amenities in the shape of swimming with dolphins and exploring the local marine life. These two sites also offer a wondrous and natural eco-tourism with jungles and beautifully stretching sparkling beaches and awe inspiring coastlines. Set yourself plenty of time to take in the sites of this area and you will not be disappointed.
This wonderful and diverse tourism destination will remain high on the list of must-see and as long as care is taken to preserve the natural wonders of this place, with humans working with nature it will remain a highly visited area with beautifully stretching coastlines and pristine beaches coupled with the tranquil blue waters of the Caribbean.
