A Traveler's Guide to Turkey

Turkey is a unique country that lies along two continents. One part of Turkey is part of Europe, while the rest is geographically situated in West Asia, (also called the Middle East). Many languages are spoken in Turkey, such: as Greek, Armenian, Kurdish, Arabic and their official language, Turkish.

Travelers that come from Western Europe are not required to have a visa, except those coming from the UK. It is still possible to travel to Turkey by means of a train from Europe, albeit not very practical. This is done by those who are driven by the romantic notion of traveling by train, made famous by the movie the Orient Express.

Arriving by plane is the fastest way to get to Turkey, and the most practical. Taxi services are widely available outside of the airports to welcome tourists.

It is a delight to travel around Turkey by bus. The buses offer accommodation equipped with air-conditioning and a great crew that attends to the needs of the passengers. They also offer food and drink. In addition to rest stops at restaurants every couple of hours or so.

Visitors who plan to drive while visiting this country should be very careful while on the road. Road accident rates are high in Turkey, especially, since their roads are often left in poor condition.

Things to do while in Turkey.

• Turkey offers a great cuisine derived from Arabic and Mediterranean style. These dishes often contain meat such as lamb, which is a staple meat in turkey. A lot of spices are also used in their dishes. Turkish coffee is a very popular drink that must be sampled while visiting.

• Travelers who are planning to go to Turkey during winter can take advantage of the numerous ski centers that are available. Rafting and yachting are also popular activities there, perfect during the summer and fall season.

• Tourists who want to absorb the culture and get better acquainted with Turkey's history can visit some of their famous landmarks such as: Topkapi Palace, Ayasofya Museum, Mt. Nemrut and the ancient City of Troy.

• Turkey is also famous for their diverse wildlife. It is one of only a few countries in the world that has preserved their ecological equilibrium. Many rare species here are protected by the government.

• The natural landscape of this country is a treasure. Visitors can go on hiking trips to partake in this wonderful outdoors experience.

It is predicted that on March 29, year 2006, a total solar eclipse will take place in Turkey. So those who want to experience this phenomenon should schedule their vacation around this time

Beat The Heat In Australia!

“Fine beaches, perfect weather, good people, and a more secure traveling experience”

If you are looking for all these conveniences and excitement, let Australia handle that for you. Perk up your traveling experience in the sixth largest country in the world, twice as large as Europe but less crowded.

Make a choice from a wide variety 7000 fantastic beaches and enjoy the luscious greens of flora of approximately 25000 species and diverse but unique fauna as evidenced by the Kangaroo.

Australians are fun-loving people and are very sociable. You can learn so much about their culture because of their very straightforward attitude towards guests and strangers.

Language Discrepancies

English maybe the widely spoken language in Australia but there are utterances which makes them unique to the rest of the English-speaking world and terminologies better left unsaid.

Some of the most common are Cobber = Buddy, Fairdinkum = Really and Cold One = Beer. Phrases such as righto = okay/alright and rag up = dress warmly are also common.

The word “root” may have evolved to mean “sex” in Australia so it is better to keep from saying that word as long as you could. Same thing applies to "fanny" which came to mean a female’s private part.

Weather

Among the 7 continents, Australia probably has the weirdest climate. Unlike the US, the months of December to February are the hottest and most humid dates of the year.

Keep in mind that Australia’s climate is just the exact opposite with that of the Northern Hemisphere

Southern Australia was recorded to having the harshest climate during the summer season and keeping it out of your itinerary is advisable.

Depending on where you are headed, there are must-haves and clothing you will need to prepare to make sure you will not be caught off-guard for any circumstances that are expected along the way.

Sunglasses and sunscreens and light clothing are important in Australia due to hot climate in some regions, but keeping a jacket during the cold night is a must especially in the southern temperate region. Nice pair of boots in the bushes is practically essential.

Transportation

Public vehicles such taxis are commonplace in Australia. Most taxis charge “flagfall” and a surcharge for distant travels.

“Keep left” is the rule of driving here. It can be quite confusing at times but being careful will surely keeps you away from trouble.

Tipping

Just the exact opposite of the west. Tipping may not be a no-no but it is not generally practice here but you can do so in some special occasions.

There are simply 1001 ways to enjoy the beauty of Australia and the good thing is, you can add more to rev up your rewarding traveling experience. Traveling to a distant place poses a lot of challenges but surely it is satisfying and worth the pennies! So enjoy and don’t forget to have a cold one with a cobber!

Journey to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, as most people are aware, is a mystical archeological ruin high up in the Andes of Peru. Built in about 1450 A.D., it’s often called the “Lost City of the Incas.” The view from the city is breathtaking because the Urubamba River winds its way three quarters of the way around the city, thousands of feet below. This gives the city a vertical scale that is perhaps not found anyplace else in the world.

Although the citadel itself is only about 8,000 feet high, there are nearby snow-covered peaks about twice as high. The area has more climatic zones within a short distance from each other than any place else in the world. The floor of the Urubamba Valley in that area is subtropical and lush. Many rare species of flora grow there. In fact, it’s known for its many delicate, beautiful and rare orchids

Getting to Machu Picchu is a challenge. The nearest town is Aguas Calientes, which means “hot waters.” This is an appropriate name, since it features a public bath fed by a natural hot springs. No roads lead to Aquas Calientes; the only way to get there is by train from the city of Cuzco, which has an airport.

Flights usually arrive in Cuzco from Lima, Peru, or La Paz, Bolivia, only in the morning, when the air is thicker. This is important because the airport is at about 9,000 feet and most planes do not land or take off very well in the thin air at that altitude. Planes depart only in the morning as well.

Tourists take a bus to the train to Aguas Calientes. Even though Cuzco is only about 50 miles away, the train takes 3.5 hours.

From Aguas Calientes, a bus winds its way up a steep mountain to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu itself has only one hotel, but travelers can choose from a number of hotels in Aquas Calientes. Although you could see Machu Picchu in one day, returning to Cuzco the same day, doing so would be a waste, because there’s so much to see.

In particular, the Sugarloaf Mountain that most pictures of Machu Picchu show is worth a visit in itself. It’s laced with an intricate system of terraces, and the trail to the top passes through a natural cave. The spectacular view from the top is second to none.

An alternative to taking the train to Machu Picchu from Cuzco is to hike the Inca Trail through the Andes. This takes several days and hikers need to be in decent shape. It’s also possible to do a combination of riding the train part of the way and hiking the rest.

Machu Picchu itself is noteworthy for its tight fitting, mortarless masonry walls. To this day, it’s a mystery how these walls where built. Machu Picchu was buried under vegetation and lichen until its rediscovery in 1910. Even today, a large herd of llama “mows” the grass in the ancient city and an army of men scrapes the lichen off the walls. Without these efforts the famous archaeological site would soon be completely overgrown once more.

Nearly one half million people visit the Machu Picchu UNESCO World Heritage site every year. It’s not easy to get to, but is well worth the trip. Machu Picchu is without doubt the premiere archeological site of the Americas.

Japan's Hidden Gem

If you have ever thought of visiting Japan, you may have images in mind of the towering skyscrapers of Shinjuku, Tokyo's business district, or a lonely shrine on a jutting peninsular looking out on the sea crashing on the rocks below. Both images are certainly very common in Japan, but most visitors never get past the bright lights of Tokyo, and the temples of Kyoto, and they think they have visited the real Japan. If you visit Japan but you neglect a visit to Kanazawa, you are missing one of the unspoiled gems that encompasses all that is traditionally Japanese.

Kanazawa is located on the Noto Peninsular, on the Sea of Japan coast, a rugged and naturally beautiful place. This makes it ideal for fishing, so if you love seafood, you simply cannot go wrong with the array of fresh fish and shellfish to choose from. Crab is particularly delicious in these areas.

Kanazawa also boasts it's own traditional food, known as Kaga cuisine, named after another town in the prefecture, Kaga. It uses traditional cooking methods and vegetables unique to the area.

One of Japan's most beautiful gardens, Kenroku-en, is located in the center of Kanazawa. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to this oasis of nature and beauty. In winter, Kanazawa typically enjoys a very heavy snowfall, which means special care has to be taken of the many trees that live in the garden. All around Kanazawa, trees are ties up with ropes in a cone shape, to protect the branches from breaking. These cones are used to advantage, and are adorned with lights around Christmas time.

Kanazawa is steeped in history. Every year a parade featuring Samurai warriors, called the Hyakumangoku Festival, takes place, culminating in a spectacle of traditional Japanese drumming and dancing, and a death-defying performance by Kanazawa's fire fighters, who perform acrobatics on the tops of their ladders. This event takes place in the grounds of Kanazawa castle, which has been restored to its former glory in recent years. Also worth a visit is the preserved Samurai district.

If you go to Japan, try not to limit your Japanese experience to Kyoto, Tokyo and Hiroshima. You will see so much more of Japan and the traditional spirit of Japan in places less frequented by tourists.

Kanazawa's gold leaf work is particularly exquisite, and would make an excellent souvenir of your trip. In fact, Kanazawa still produces most of Japan's gold leaf, and if you visit Kyoto's most famous temple, Kinkakuji, you will be looking at a temple covered in gold leaf made in Kanazawa.

Although Kanazawa is not located on a bullet train route, it is easily accessible by express train from Osaka and Tokyo. There are plenty of cheap places to stay in the city, ranging from about 4000 yen, which is about 20 dollars per night.

Scuba Diving While Vacationing in Mexico

Millions of Americans schedule a Mexico vacation. If you are interested in scheduling a vacation in Mexico, or you already have, you may be wondering what you can do while on vacation. In Mexico, there are an unlimited number of activities that you may find exciting. One of those activities may include scuba diving.

When it comes to scuba diving in Mexico, there are many travelers who are misinformed. Many believe that you have to be an experienced diver to enjoy underwater diving. This is simply not true. Before going scuba diving in the ocean, it is advised that you have basic knowledge of diving and strong swimming skills. However, you do not have to be an experienced diver. When vacationing in Mexico, there are many individuals who go scuba diving for the first time.

Scuba diving is a pretty self-explained activity. Scuba divers are featured in many movies and can be found in many amusement parks. While the general idea of scuba diving is the same in Mexico, what you will see underwater is not. There are a number of underwater animals and plants that can only be seen in or around the Mexico area. This in itself is one of the many reasons why you should schedule a scuba diving adventure.

In Mexico, scuba divers are often able to swim with the dolphins and sea turtles. To many, this alone is worth the cost of scuba diving. Aside from swimming with sea animals, you can also spend your scuba diving trip examining the life and environment underwater. Just a few of the many sea animals that you may see in Mexico include lobsters, eels, sting rays, and a large number of different kinds of fishes. The fishes found in underwater Mexico often include puffer fishes, spotted fishes, and parrot fishes.

While the sea animals found underwater are the most exciting part of scuba diving, there are other underwater activities that you can participate in. Many scuba divers enjoy diving along coral reefs that are found along the coast of Mexico. Coral reefs are not only home to a large number of sea animals, but they also make for great adventures. You may find it exciting traveling in, over, or around the many different sized reefs.

Unless you are an experienced underwater diver, you are advised to go scuba diving with a trained professional. These professionals are most commonly found with scuba diving tour groups. Scuba diving tour groups can be found all along the coast of Mexico. Scuba diving is a popular pastime in Mexico; therefore, you are encouraged to schedule your scuba diving adventures ahead of time.

In addition to scheduling a scuba dive with a trained diver, you can learn how to scuba dive at a number of locations in Mexico. Many of these locations also offer guided tours. Scuba diving lessons are offered as group lessons or private lessons. Private lessons may be more expensive, but many first time scuba divers find them rewarding, in more ways than one.

Underworld Scuba operates scuba diving and snorkeling tours in the Manzanillo area of Mexico. It has been said that the Manzanillo area is one of the best places to go scuba diving in Mexico. Underworld Scuba, along with number other companies, state that the area is thriving with underwater life and adventures. Another popular scuba diving tour company is The Puerto Dive Team, which operates out of Oaxaco Mexico. They are most known for their private one-on-one underwater tours.

To find other guided tours that are designed for scuba divers, you are encouraged to contact your local travel agent or do the research yourself. Whether or not you have already selected your Mexico destination, you should easily be able to find nearby tours. The closer you are to the coast, the more tours you will have access to. What you can do and see underwater is absolutely amazing. It is likely what you see will stay with you for years to come.

Mexico Vacations for Seniors

All around the world, senior traveling is increasing in popularity. A large number of senior citizens are making the decision to get out and travel. If you are one of those individuals, you have likely examined a number of popular vacation destinations. If so, was Mexico on your list?

Mexico is an amazing place to vacation. It is ideal for individuals of all ages. A large number of senior citizens travel to Mexico, each year. Despite what many believe, the United States and Europe are not the only vacation destinations that are ideal for senior citizens. If you are able to take the time to examine what Mexico has to offer, you will likely want to schedule your next vacation there.

As with any other vacation destination, Mexico has a wide range of activities. Many of these activities are perfect for senior citizens. Just a few of the many activities found in Mexico include relaxing at the beach, taking a boat cruise, or going on a guided tour. If you are only able to select a few of these activities, you will want to examine each activity and determine which one brings you the most excitement.

One of the most preferred activities, in all of Mexico, for senior citizens is guided tours. When you think of a guided tour, what first comes to mind? Many individuals assume hiking or biking through rough terrain, but that is not what Mexico guided tours are all about. It is true, you may find guided tours that require a large amount of walking, but additional alterative are available.

Popular guided tours, that are ideal for senior citizens include, ATV tours, bus tours, and boat tours. ATV tours are ideal for those who wish to have a little bit of freedom and excitement while touring Mexico. For those that wish to relax while seeing what Mexico has to offer, boat tours or bus tours may be best.

Similar to guided tours, boat cruises are also available. Many senior citizens consider Mexico boat tours similar to travel aboard a cruise ship. Instead of taking an extended cruise, most boat tours only last a few hours. The length of your tour may be a deciding factor in whether or not you wish to take a boat cruise.

While boat cruises are often used to sightsee, there are many that serve other purposes. Many boat cruises offer exciting onboard activities. These activities often include a night of dinner and dancing. With a little bit of research, it may be possible to find a boat cruise that is designed specifically for senior citizens.

Mexico is most known for their beautiful, fun, and exciting beaches. If you are interested in relaxing at the beach, you have a number of options to choose from. Due to Mexico’s popularity, many public beaches are overcrowded, especially in the spring and summer months. If you would prefer to stay away from large crowds, you may want to consider scheduling your beach vacation at a beach resort.

Mexico beach resorts come in all different sizes and styles. As with most popular beaches, many beach resorts quickly fill up with tourists. Aside from large, well-known resorts, Mexico offers a number of smaller resorts that have a focus on relaxation and privacy. If you are interested in spending your vacation in a private and intimate setting, you may want to consider these types of resorts.

Relaxing by the beach, taking a boat cruise, or going on a guided tour are just a few of the many activities that you can participate in while on a Mexico vacation. Additional activities may include, but should not be limited to, boating, fishing, snorkeling, or horseback riding.

Before participating in a certain activity, you are encouraged to examine your health and your ability to participate. This is not something that is limited just to senior citizens. All individuals are encouraged to examine their ability to complete and participate in certain activities. It is advised that you enjoy your vacation, not push yourself to the limits.

Touring the Mexican Jungle

While vacationing in Mexico there are an unlimited number of places to visit and unlimited number of activities to participate in. If you have never had the opportunity to visit Mexico before, you may be wonder just what some of the activities are. How about the jungle? Does exploring the jungle sound like fun?

It you think that exploring Mexican jungles sounds like a fun and exciting activity then you are not alone. Jungle tours are currently a well-kept secret in Mexico, for the most part. However, they are rapidly beginning to increase in popularity. One of the many reasons why jungle tours are becoming popular is because of how the tours are being carried out.

In most Mexican jungles the terrain makes it difficult or impossible for guided tours to take place from a bus or a car. Hiking or biking is often dangerous or impossible. If you are interested in scheduling a Mexican jungle tour, you will find that most tours are known as ATV jungle tours. The all terrain vehicles are what make most jungle tours fun and exciting.

If you are interested in scheduling an ATV jungle tour, you will have to find a tour guide or company. ATV rentals are available, but you are advised against touring the jungles on your own. Professional ATV tour guides not only know where to look in the jungle for exciting adventures, but they also know how to keep you safe. To find an individual or company that specializes in ATV jungle tours, you can contact your travel agent or do the research yourself.

While researching ATV jungle tours, it is likely that you will come up with a number of tour companies. When selecting a tour guide, it is advised that you determine the location of each tour and then compare it to your intended Mexico destination. ATV jungle tour guides are popular, but they can only be found in limited areas. If you are interested in scheduling an ATV jungle tour, you may have to be prepared to travel to the intended tour site.

If you are vacationing in or around the Cancun area, you may be able to schedule an ATV tour with Jungle Jim’s ATV Adventure. According to their website, this ATV tour was rated as the best ATV tour in the area for two years. Cozumel Tours offer ATV jungle tours in and around the Mezcalitos area. Cozumel Tours and Jungle Jim’s ATV Adventure are just a couple of the many ATV tours that can be found in Mexico. If these tours do not service your area, you are encouraged to keep on looking.

ATV jungle tours are popular in Mexico, but they are not the only tours that you can participate in while vacationing in Mexico. Many tourists find it exciting to ride an ATV along the coast or other in Mexican destinations. If you are interested in scheduling an ATV tour, whether that tour is of the jungle or beach, you are encouraged to determine whether or not reservations will be needed. The need for reservations often depends on the tour company which you plan on doing business with.

As previously mentioned, you can either research or book your own ATV jungle tour reservations on your own or can do so with the assistance of a travel agent. When selecting reservations, you may want to be on the lookout for tour packages. These packages may include a wide range of Mexico tours, in addition to ATV jungle tours. Many times, you may be able to schedule an ATV tour, hiking tour, or snorkeling adventure all one weekend and for one low-price.

It is likely that you expected to find an unlimited number of activities on your Mexico vacation, but did you honestly expect ATV jungle tours? In Mexico, it is often difficult to know what to expect. Perhaps, the unexpected and unknown is what draws so many to Mexico.

Experiencing The Region of Alsace

The region of the three frontiers where France, Switzerland and Germany meet is known for its rich artistic delights, cultural heritage, intellectual history and outdoor activities. Bordering the Black Forest, the Alsace region has much to offer and is truly a unique place to live. If you find yourself traveling in the Alsace region, this is certainly a part of Europe you should check out.

Alsace, unlike the other French regions, is rich in French, German and Swiss influences. The region is situated among the Vosges mountains in the mid-eastern to north-eastern part of France. Alsace is the smallest of all French regions with Strasbourg bordering Germany and the Rhine River. Towards Mulhouse in the south, the region is bordered by Switzerland and the region known as Franche-Comte.

Along the Rhine River much of the Alsace region lies in a fertile plain perfect for vine growing. Stop to adore the beautiful flowers aligning the small villages, as well as the culture and architecture from other centuries. The lower area, which rises from the Rhine, is checkered with vineyards and is definitely a hot place to visit for wine tasting. The higher slopes are sprinkled with monasteries and old castles among an abundance of trees, especially wonderful if you want to take an easy hike.

Alsace is unique, among French regions, due to its dual Franco-Germanic cultures. Its principal cities are Colmar, Mulhouse and the regional capital Strasbourg. Most of the population speaks French along with the Alsatian dialect influenced from the French, German and Swiss German roots. The cuisine is a unique blend of French and German cooking always enjoyable with the ever desirable wines from the region. Many of the towns of the region have German names with village architecture honoring the pronounced Germanic influence.

A visit to the Alsace area is always a delightful experience. The Alsace region provides an enjoyable and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. One can drive or take a train ride along the Rhine and watch the beautiful scenery unfold before your eyes. The word 'magnifique' describes this beautiful region as you escape city life into a peaceful solitude.

Stay in mountain slopes at a bed and breakfast, known as a 'zimmer', to enjoy the local cuisine and people. With Strasbourg just nearby, take a day trip to the headquarters of the European Parliament, and experience all its wonderful architecture and diverse culture the city has to offer. Despite its international flavor, Strasbourg is a somewhat laid back city compared to larger cities in Europe.

Home of the capital of art wines of Alsace, Colmar is a city in another world whose identity represents the entire Alsace region. Appreciate the cities half-timbered houses, and view the Unterlinden Museum which is housed in a former monastery housing the well known 'altar piece of Issenheim'. You can see a little of everything Alsace has to offer in the Unterlinden Museum, including archeological objects, sculptures and paintings from the middle ages, Renaissance art, as well as popular Alsatian art.

Just two hours south of Strasbourg is Mulhouse. Since the 12th century, Mulhouse has reflected an ever changing industrial city. Known for its astonishing diversity, Mulhouse has 12 of the most prestigious museums in the world, including eight of which are devoted to technologies. The most popular include the Museum of the Car, the Museum of the Railroad and the Museum of the Impression of Fabric.

In August, Mulhouse is host to a large automobile parade while in December feast yourself on its popular Christmas market. The Eco Museum of Alsace, pronounced 'L'ecomusee' in French, boasts something to do for the entire family. Walk along its grounds to tour this imaginary Alsatian village and experience stories and workshops of how people lived before modern times. Flashback in time and view the silversmiths and goldsmiths at work. You might even try it yourself before the kids dash off to games and rides in a carnival atmosphere.

A culturally diverse city just 45 minutes south of Basel, visit the German town of Freiburg. Meaning Green city, the college town of Freiburg spreads onto the foot of the Black Forest where you can explore its wonders. Freiburg is famous for its secular history, cathedrals, museums, and shopping. As many of the towns in this region, Freiburg boasts an incredibly festive atmosphere during Christmas and Carnival which cannot be missed.

During the summer months visit Basel, where you can enjoy many outdoor pubs and restaurants which adorn the downtown corridor along with shopping, and night life full of many travelers from abroad. Venture to 'les trois frontieres' and you will be standing where France, Germany and Switzerland all meet together at one point.

Clearly Alsace was recognized the most for its artistic, cultural and intellectual works. French, German and Italian influences met and enriched the region with Gothic art followed by Roman art. The region is so rich that there is definitely something to offer for the entire family.

Visiting The Swiss Riviera

The Swiss Riviera is located on the shores of Lake Leman stretching from Geneva which is 99 km to the south and Montreux to the north east. With an abundance of sailboats dotting its shores, Lake Leman is the biggest fresh water lake in Western Europe and a pearl for travelers visiting Switzerland.

Most of French-speaking Switzerland is so appealing because it barely registers on the package tour circuit. You can swap a bus full of Japanese tourists shopping for cuckoo clocks in Lucern for a hillside of blooming narcissi or a wine village with spell-binding views and a deep blue-green gleam along Lake Leman.

Make your first glimpse of the Swiss Riviera, a playground for the rich and famous, from the window of a Panoramic train as it descends the snow-capped Alps upon French-style farmhouses adorned with terraced vineyards just beside you and Lake Leman.

Lake Leman possesses such grace with its calm azure waters and graceful swans patrolling underneath the medieval Chillon Castle. However, Chillon's history is no fairytale. During Switzerland's witchcraft purges, dozens of women were tortured here while many others were incarcerated. Lord Bryon, who visited in 1816, wrote an epic poem about Francois Bonivard, the prisoner chained in the dungeons of Chillon.

Steep mountains and vineyards terraces mirror in the crystal clear waters of the lake, providing a feeling of complete harmony and relaxation. Discover the unique terraced vineyards of the wine growing village of Lavaux which represents the culture of the region. Why not take a stroll along exceptional landscape away from the road traffic and into ever changing colors of the over 50 vineyards alongside Lake Leman.

Montreux is one of those places that seem to hold a certain tantalizing magic. With a sought after and mild microclimate, Montreux is spectacularly located at the shores of Lake Leman with the afternoon sunshine streaming across the lake. Visitors can marvel at a wide variety of well kept tropical plants lining the scenic ten km lakeside walk.

Lake Leman's summers are definitely Riviera-like, reaching a sweltering 95 F in mid July. Be sure to cool off at one of the many beaches and regattas in the summer months, surrounded on all sides by the Swiss and French Alps. Relatively speaking, winters can be quite mild, which explains the terraced vineyards and infamous banana and palm trees along the lakeshore.

Take a day trip on a classic Pullman rail car to the medieval village of Gruyere where you will witness cheese making demonstrations the traditional way. In the afternoon, enjoy Nestle's Callier chocolate factory located in Broc where you can indulge in the taste of pure chocolate heaven.

In high summer, ferries ply between the lakeside villages, spending much of your time afloat on the lake. Ferries also go to such areas as Geneva bound for Yvoire and Lausanne bound for Evian (source of the famous bottled water) in France. Such cultural attractions as the Nestle food museum and farmers markets open along the shores every Saturday to shoppers.

Ernest Hemingway, Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Shania Twain and Freddy Mercury all owned homes in Montreux and neighboring Vevey. Charlie Chaplin spent the last 25 years of his life in Vevey, with a statue of him along the lakefront. One can only bask on a terrace at sunset and marvel at the huge expanse of green land and presence of mountains beyond.

While the Swiss Riviera is in some ways passe these days, new luxurious wellness centers have sprung along its shores to entice visitors to come rest and play. Come relax at such wellness centers as the Amrita Wellness Center at Le Montreux Palace, the Givenchy Spa at Le Mirador, the Puressens Spat at Hotel Trois Couronnes in Vevey and La Reserve Hotel and Spa in Geneva. Switzerland is renewing its spa reputation and millions have been spent to create everything you could possibly need to de-stress, detox, lose weight, tone up and bring mind and body back to optimal health.

It's quite easy to understand why once you catch a glimpse of the ambling quai des fleurs among the neighboring towns and villages you will never want to leave its beauty. You'd never tire of the ever changing panorama of lakes, alpine pinnacles, and twinkling villages. Best of all, within a half-an-hour you can be high in the mountainous Alps enjoy various winter sports.

The people of the Swiss Riviera are very International. Don't worry if your French is a little rusty, as they are English friendly (among Switzerland's four national languages) and are happy to answer your questions. Make the Swiss Riviera your ideal spot for your next vacation at any time of the year.

Rendez-Vous in the French Riviera

The southeast corner of France known as Provence – called the French Riviera for its maritime area between Toulon and Nice - is a romantic location with a little bit of everything to offer the traveler.

Provence stretches from Cap Nègre on the Maures ledge, to Cap Brun in the Esteral area, and from Cap Roux near Toulon to the Iles d'Or (the Golden Isles) out in the Mediterranean Sea. Inland, the area runs as far as the Argens and the Verdon River to the north.

The region of Provence is so called because it was one of the first outlying provinces established by the Romans. They called it "Provincia Romana" and it was one of the jewels of the Roman Empire. Gradually, over hundreds of years, the word Provincia changed to Provence. "Provencal" is a dialect still spoken here by many people.

Remnants of the ancient empire still abound. There is the Pont duGard aqueduct that towers 160 feet above your head and a Roman arena still used for bullfights and concerts in Avignon. Arles, with its famous Roman arena, and Frejus (a city named and built by Julius Caesar) still has traces of the port where Caesar's navy once docked.

Everywhere you go, historical sites abound with majestic stone castles sitting regally just off the side of country roads, and you might find the remnants of a pagan temple next to an austere Catholic church with tall spires and towers that took decades to build.

The rich and famous flocks to the Riviera every year, much like the swallows to Capistrano. Walk along the city streets in the spring, or one of the many bustling open-air fruit and vegetable markets, and you might just find yourself passing a famous movie star or fashion model.

Even the names of some of the Riviera's most famous cities bring to mind pictures of white sandy beaches, a turquoise sea, and endless days under a tropical sun -- St. Tropez, Monaco, Nice, Cannes.

Do you enjoy biking and hiking? Swimming? Boating? How about taking a walking tour along narrow cobblestone streets in tiny villages that date back to mediaeval times? A romantic river cruise? Swimming in the Mediterranean Sea? You'll find all of this and more in Provence.

And of course, there are numerous opportunities for experiencing French cooking at its best. Dining in France is almost a religious experience! When dining at someone's home, it's not unusual for dinner to last three to four hours. If the occasion is an especially memorable one, dinner can go until two or three in the morning!

When eating at a French restaurant, it won't matter if you choose a four star restaurant, or a tiny sidewalk café. Your experience is sure to be a gastronomic delight for your palette. And don't even think of rushing through your meal! Each course is presented with a certain formality and ceremony that makes dining a pleasure. And you are always given plenty of time to savor each course and never made to feel as if you must vacate your table quickly for the next diners.

The Mediterranean Sea is breathtaking, whether you're seeing it from the air for the first time as your plane lands in Nice, or while walking along the rocky beaches at Cannes. Its colors change with its moods – turquoise, emerald, and sapphire – and the water is clear and warm for 6 months of the year. In the winter, although it's too cold to swim (except for the most hardy of souls), the Med's mood and color matches the steel gray clouds, and you'll enjoy the practically deserted beaches and the bracing wind as you walk along the shore.

You have many choices for lodging in Provence. Stay at a four-star hotel, and you may find yourself sleeping on crisp Egyptian cotton sheets, in a bed once used by kings and queens. There are charming bed and breakfast cottages, where you'll be served your meals family-style and learn the history behind the best places in the area to visit from your hostess. Or choose a former monastery, where you'll find peace and tranquility, staying in small, quiet rooms with thick stone walls and enjoy walking through outdoor gardens with large fountains where wild rosemary and thyme grow abundantly.

The people of Provence are friendly and helpful. They won't mind if your French is a little rusty, and will go out of their way to talk to you, and answer your questions.

Each season has its own charms. Spring, when the mimosa trees are bursting with the delicate yellow blooms, red poppies grow wild alongside the autoroute and there are fields of tulips to rival those in Holland.

Summer, when succulent fruits are abundant everywhere, the leaves of the grapevines become an endless "sea of green" when viewed from the road, and the Mediterranean sea offers a respite from the tropical heat.

Fall, when the grapevines are heavy and full with their harvest, the red, yellow and oranges leaves clothe the trees in splendid cloaks and community festivals happen almost every weekend.

Winter, when the weather is mild and sunny days are plentiful, but tourists are not.

Provence is an ideal spot for the perfect vacation at any time of year. The area is so spectacular that even visitors who are just "passing through" find it hard to say good-bye.

Cruise Ships: A Romantic Getaway for Couples

With large workloads, hectic schedules, and children, many couples need a break from their daily routines. This break often comes in the form of a romantic getaway. If you and your partner are searching your next romantic adventure, you may want to examine the possibility of taking a cruise.

When it comes to romantic getaways, there are many who don’t even consider a cruise ship as an option. However, there are others who literally live for cruises. These couples are likely to take two or more cruises each year. Whether you’ve been on a cruise ship before or not, it is possible for you and your partner to have a romantic cruise ship getaway.

Before booking a cruise ship getaway, you are encouraged to consider a number of factors. These factors are important when planning a romantic getaway aboard a cruise ship. There are a number of different cruises ships and cruises lines. You may be unable to enjoy a romantic vacation if you are on a cruise ship that is overrun with children.

If you are interested in having an intimate, relaxing, and romantic cruise, you are encouraged to search for a cruise ship that has an age limit for its passengers. These cruise ships often restrict children from coming aboard. Many times, cruise ships with a passenger age limit target their voyages specifically to couples looking for romance.

While it is possible to find a cruise ship with an age limit for their passengers, you may find it a bit difficult. If you are unable to find one, inquire as to where couples with children will be placed. A number of popular cruise ships work to keep families and individual couples separated. If this policy is in place, a cruise line is likely to state the policy on their website. The same information can be obtained by directly contacting a cruise ship representative.

The size of the cruise ship you are interested in vacationing on is also likely to determine the level of intimacy onboard. If it is intimacy that you want, a smaller cruise ship may be your best bet. Larger cruises ships have more passages and more passengers often make it difficult to have onboard, private moments. A number of romantic cruise lines target their smaller cruise ships to couples looking to vacation alone.

In addition to the size of the ship, the ships style and décor may determine whether or not you can experience romance onboard. As previously mentioned, there are a number of cruise lines that target couples looking to vacation alone. Part of that targeting may include creating a romantic environment. On romance themed cruise ships, you may find romantic cabins, room service, and other similar services.

Vacationing aboard a cruise ship is a great way for you and your partner to spend quality time together. When selecting a cruise ship to vacation on, the intimacy off the ship is just as important as on the ship. Almost all extended cruise ships dock in a port. These ports are often located in another country, but not always. To make the most out of your vacation destination, you will want to consider a cruise line that offers stops in romantic ports. These ports may include, but are not limited to the Bahamas, Hawaii, or the Caribbean.

The Bahamas, Hawaii, and the Caribbean all have a number of cruise ship ports. Additional ports can be found in the Untied States and overseas. What many passengers enjoy about these particular ports is their climate. The climate and the overall weather could have an impact on the romance aboard your ship. Tropical weather tends to add to the romance in the air.

Cruises ships are often viewed as large, oversized vessels. In addition to traditional cruise ships, it is possible for you to take a local cruise. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, but you fear the cost of an expensive cruise, you are encouraged to look into local cruises offered near your home. These cruises often involve dinner, dancing, and sometimes an overnight stay. They most often occur on a large river or a lake.

Now that you know what to look for when booking reservations for a romantic getaway aboard a cruise ship, you can start making preparations. With a small amount of time and research, you could be sailing the seas in luxury, with the one that you love.

Glamour, Glitz & Gold -- Planning Your Trip to Monaco

Monaco, a tiny principality that sits atop a steep, rocky coastline overlooking the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea, enjoys sunshine 300 days a year with mild winters and moderate summer temperatures. Located between the Mediterranean Sea and the French Alps, France lies to the west and Italy to the east.

Well-known as a playground of the rich and famous, Monaco is also a perfect getaway when planning a trip to either the French or Italian Rivera’s. Whether driving or flying, getting to Monaco is easy. From the International Airport in Nice, you can even take a 7-½ minute helicopter ride to Monaco via Heli Air Monaco or Monicair. The price of your ticket includes free transport from the heliport to anywhere you want to go in Monaco and free pickup on your return. Having a car in Monaco isn’t really necessary, as you can walk to most districts within the city within twenty to thirty minutes at most, especially if you’re going to Monaco for business and not planning on doing much sight-seeing outside of the city.

The first thing you'll notice when you arrive are the cars! It's not uncommon to see a Rolls Royce double-parked next to a shiny Ferrari which is sitting in front of a Porsche near the casino, and the sheer number of expensive sports cars is amazing.

The next thing you'll notice is how clean it is. You'll seldom even see litter on the streets. And finally, you'll be delighted by the more than 100 statues, fountains and sculptures that are found throughout all five districts of Monaco. As you wander around you'll soon discover the narrow, winding medieval alleyways, stone arches and "secret" passageways, fragrant flowers and pastel-painted buildings with red tiled roofs so characteristic of the French Riviera.

Nicknamed "the Rock" by the locals, there are many things to see and do in Monaco, and thanks to the generosity and foresight of Prince Rainier III, the former Prince of Monaco, many of them are free. About the size of Central Park in New York City, Monaco is three miles long and one-half mile wide. Although it’s the second smallest country in the world (Vatican City is the smallest), Monaco nonetheless offers something for everyone.

During the tourist season, you’ll find fairs, festivals, rallies or other celebrations scheduled almost every day. Off-season has its charms as well, with less to do, but also less traffic, fewer tourists and the chance to really explore all that Monaco has to offer.

Helpful Information:

Currency: The European Euro

Identification and Length of Stay: To enter Monaco, you need the same identification used for gaining entry to France (passport, travel or identity documents), and you can stay for up to 90 days without a visa.

Principal Language: French, although many natives still speak the ancient Monegasque. Italian and English are also commonly spoken.

Nearest Airport: International Cote d’Azur Nice is approximately 15 miles away.

Transportation from Airport: Bus, train, helicopter, private limousine, taxi, rental car or motorcycle.

Basic Geography:

Monaco is divided into five districts.

1. The Ville on the Rock, which includes the Prince’s Palace, the gardens, the Ramparts, the Cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum.

2. The Condamine, which is the second oldest area in Monaco. It’s name dates back to the Middle Ages and refers to the area of cultivatable land at the foot of a village or castle.

3. Monte Carlo, which was built in 1866 and named in honor of Prince Charles III. Monte Carlo is famous for its casino, luxury hotels and unique boutiques.

4. Fontvieille is the newest area of Monaco, and is actually "land" that has been reclaimed from the sea. The manmade harbor has hotels, shopping, restaurants, the stadium and sports complex and is a pollution free industrial area as well.

5. Moneghetti, which is a "must-see" district. It features the Révoires and the Exotic Gardens. Underneath the gardens is a prehistoric cave.

Pets: Pets are often allowed in hotels and restaurants, but it’s a good idea to check first.

There are currently 7 public elevators that will make it easier for you to go up and down Monaco's steep elevations and public areas.

Where to Stay:

Hotels and accommodations in Monaco range from the very inexpensive to the luxurious. Each year, more than 260,000 tourists come here for business and pleasure.

Monaco’s flagship hotel is still the “Hotel de Paris” with its almost unbelievable luxury and unparalleled attention to your every wish.

However, if spending upwards of $500 a night during high season isn’t in your budget, try the Hermitage, (which offers old-world charm and elegance), or the more modern Mirabeau, which is near the business center and close to night life attractions as well.

If you prefer being near the Med, the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel provides all the amenities and breathtaking views.

A wonderful family hotel that even offers onsite babysitting is the Tulip Inn Monaco Terminus.

The Monte Carlo Grand Hotel is an imposing building, with seven polygonal terraces that overlook the Med or the Grand Prix race course. The hotel offers 30 suites, several restaurants, a rooftop swimming pool and, of course, a shopping arcade.

Although 750 hotel rooms have been recently added in Monaco, (increasing the previous number by one-third), if you’re hoping to get a room for next year’s Grand Prix, you may still be out of luck! Rooms for that event are usually booked a year in advance, and sometimes more.)

Where to Eat:

Arguably the finest restaurant in Monaco is the Louis XV. (It has a 3-star rating in the Michelin Guide). Elegantly formal, the restaurant is colored in gold – from the furnishings and architectural details all the way down to the plates and flatware. And the service is as superb as the food.

One of the “in” places to be “seen” is the Café de Paris. Sit back, have a drink and while you’re waiting for your lunch to arrive, enjoy the totally French atmosphere. Locals frequent the café as often as tourists, and if you are fluent at all in French, you might hear the latest gossip about one of the Royal family, or speculation about whom the huge white yachts lined up in the harbor belong to.

Visit the bar in the Hotel de Paris across the street and enjoy an aperitif in the late afternoon or early evening, and drink in the atmosphere. Located on the Golden Square of the Place du Casino, it is lavishly decorated in muted tones of gold, rose and maroon.

What to See:

The Monte-Carlo Casino: What would a visit to Monaco be without a stop in the famous district of Monte Carlo and its casino? Built in 1878 by Charles Garnier, it was Europe’s first gambling establishment. The atrium is paved in marble and is surrounded by 28 Ionic columns made from onyx. The casino (which charges a fee to enter and has a dress code of jacket and tie for men) also requires identification, so take your passport. Beyond the main salons is a private gaming room for high rollers.

The Naval Museum: The museum is like a three dimensional encyclopedia of naval history, dating from the Romans up to modern day. With one of the most diverse collections in the world, you can find over 250 models and other unique objects here.

Zoological Terraces: Opened by HRH Prince Rainier III in 1954, the zoo was built on the south face of the Rock of Monaco and overlooks the Port of Fontvieille. The collection of 250 animals (more than 50 different species) includes a Black Panther, White Tiger, Hippopotamus, Lemurs and a large variety of exotic birds. The atmosphere is peaceful and the views are as spectacular as the animals.

Princess Grace Rose Garden: Here you'll find the peace and serenity that Princess Grace herself was known for. There are over 4,000 rose bushes here.

The Exotic Garden: This garden, daringly landscaped against the rocky face of the cliff, features several thousand succulent plants, flowers and cacti from all over the world.
60 meters down from the garden accessible by a long stairway, is the Observatory cave. The stalactites and stalagmites and natural limestone sculptures are a wonder in themselves. Close by, the Museum of Prehistoric Antiquity not only traces the history of mankind, but features local archaeological finds as well.

The Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium: This is another must-see, housing a permanent display of Jacques Coustou and one of the finest aquariums in the world. Or take the Seabus, a glass-bottomed submarine that gives passengers a birds-eye view of the Med.

You might come to Monaco for the gold, the glamour or the glitz, but you'll fall in love with the little kingdom by the sea.

Brazil has a very diverse culture and a wonderful climate. Summer starts in December and ends in February in this South American country. So before going on a trip to Brazil, one has to have enough information on what to bring. Here are a few tips to help in deciding in what to prepare for a trip to this fine country.

Costal Cottage Rentals: Your Own, Private Summer Vacation Destination

Every year, a large number of tourists flock to coastal beaches. In fact, you may be one of those individuals. Vacationing at the beach is nice, but many beaches are overcrowded and limited on privacy. Do you ever wish that you could just rent your own private coastal cottage? Many only dream of renting a costal cottage, but that dream can easily become a reality.

Costal beaches are not a well-kept secret. They are one the of most popular summer vacation destinations in the world. However, costal cottage rentals can easily be considered a well-kept secret. Many individuals and families do not even know they exist. If this existence is known, there are many who believe the cost will exceed their vacation budget. In many cases, this is simply not true.

Throughout the world, including the United States and Europe, there are a number of popular vacation destinations that offer costal cottage rentals. If you are interested in renting a costal cottage, you may be wondering how a popular vacation destination can offer you privacy. The level of privacy you receive will all depend on where you choose to vacation.

In the United States and much of Europe, costal cottage rentals are located near a popular vacation destination. They do not have to be right in the middle of the excitement to be considered a popular vacation “hot spot.” You may find that number of costal cottage rentals that are within a short drive or walking distance to many public facilities and activities. These activities may include, but are not limited to, swimming on a public beach, fishing, or sightseeing.

When selecting a location to rent a costal cottage, there are a number of important factors that you may want to consider. One of those factors is the price of renting a cottage. In the Untied States and much of the world, cottage rentals are available up and down the coasts. Each of these locations are likely to charge different rental fees. You will find that in most areas pricing is competitive.

In addition to the cost of a costal cottage rental, you will also want to examine who owns the cottage. A large number of private landowners are beginning to notice the profits that they can receive from rentals. Other costal cottage rentals are often owned by vacation resorts. When selecting a cottage rental, it is important to ensure that you doing business with a trustworthy company or individual.

Before booking a reservation, you are encouraged to request pictures. These pictures should come from the specific cottage that you are interested in renting. Cottage pictures may be able to determine the exact cottage location, when compared to the coast. They may also enable you to determine which rooms and services can be found onsite. Determining whether or not the cottage has a kitchen, dining room, or laundry room is important, especially when preparing for your vacation.

In addition to costal cottage conditions, you may want to consider researching nearby activities. These activities may be important if you don’t plan on spending your whole vacation at the cottage. In many popular summer vacation destinations, you should be able to find a large number of restaurants, theme parks, ocean boat tours, and guided fishing expeditions. The closer your cottage rental is to a popular summer vacation destination, the more access you will have to offsite activities, services, and facilities.

Once you have made the decision to rent a costal cottage and you have selected a destination, you are encouraged to schedule your reservations as soon as possible. All around the world, costal cottage rentals are increasing in popularity. This popularity may make it difficult or impossible for you to obtain last minute cottage rentals. As with all other vacations, you are encouraged to plan ahead.

Visiting Popular Summer Vacation Destinations While on a Budget

If you are like most other individuals and families, your finances may be tight. There are many families who are just scraping by and others are on the border of debt. If this situation sounds all too familiar, a summer vacation may be the last thing on your mind. If you and your family are interested in taking a summer vacation, you can, no matter what your financial situation.

When selecting a summer vacation destination on a budget, it is important that you do not limit yourself. There are too many individuals who search for a vacation destination solely based on price. Instead of first searching for low-cost vacations, you are encouraged to find the vacation destination of your dreams. Once you closely examine the hotels, restaurants, amusement parks, or beaches that your selected destination has to offer, you can easily learn how and where to save money.

If the beach sounds like the perfect summer vacation destination, you have a number of options. Popular beaches, that are designed for those on a budget in the United States may include, but are not limited to, Virginia Beach, Pensacola Beach, and Long Beach. You can plan a beach vacation in the Caribbean or overseas; however, the cost of travel will likely increase the cost of your vacation.

Virginia Beach, Long Beach, Daytona Beach, Myrtle Beach, and Long Beach are all known as vacation “hotspots.” Many individuals automatically assume that the most popular beach destinations are too expensive. While some facilities and activities may be high priced, there are ways for you to vacation there on a budget. Instead of staying at an ocean-side resort, you could save a large amount of money by booking an inland hotel. The same can be said for restaurants, bars, and event centers. Almost everything is more expensive on the shoreline.

If you are more interested in spending your vacation golfing, you may want to examine the golf resorts in and around the Untied States. Many popular golf courses are located in Myrtle Beach, Newport Beach, and Scottsdale. If you are on a budget, you can easily benefit from purchasing a resort package. Many popular golf resorts, in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean offer packages that offer accommodations that may include travel, hotel stays, golf course visits, and dining.

Golf resorts are popular vacation destinations for many individuals, but many can be expensive. If you are unable to obtain a discount vacation package, but you still want to your vacation to have a focus on golf, you have a number of options. Many golf resorts allow vacationers to play on their courses, even if they are not staying at the resort. It is also possible to golf at well-known golf courses that are not considered resorts. As with a beach vacation, you may be able to save a large amount of money by staying at a hotel or dinning away from a golf resort.

Theme parks and amusement parks are popular vacation destinations, especially for those with children. If you and your family are interested in vacationing at a United States theme park, you have a number of options. Theme park resorts are similar to, the above mentioned, golf resorts. A large number of well-known theme park resorts, including Orlando Studios, Disneyland, and Disney World can be selected, even if you are on a budget. Many of these resorts offer vacation packages that include hotel stays, theme park use, onsite dinning, and much more.

Theme park resort packages are a great way to save money, but you could save even more by not paying for services that you will not use. If you do not have to fly to reach your destination you should not have to have travel accommodations included in your package. You may also be able to find cheaper hotel accommodations that are located a short distance away from the theme park of your choice. In addition to theme park resorts, you can find days of fun at smaller parks, such as Six Flags, Sea World, and Bush Gardens.

You may recognize many of the above mentioned summer vacation destinations. Popular vacation destinations do not have to be financially out of your reach. Simply by cutting a few corners, you could be vacationing along side the rest of America, even while on a budget.
