Cowes Week

Cowes Week

Skandia Cowes Week is a huge event in the British sporting calendar. With 40 races every day and over 1,000 boats on show, it's the largest sailing regatta in the world! Cowes Week lasts for eight days and takes place every August in the Solent waters off Cowes in the United Kingdom.

History - Cowes Week takes place after Glorious Goodwood and before the Glorious Twelfth (the first day of the grouse shooting season). The first race was for a "Gold Cup of the Value of £100", held in 1826. The following year King George IV showed his approval of the event and presented the 'King's Cup', presented at every event until 1939. The early 1900's saw Cowes Regatta build in size and popularity, showcasing an array of sailing vessels. In the decades following World War II, yachting moved away from its image as a rich man's sport to modest self-skippered 30 foot yachts. In 1995, following two years during which Cowes Week was supported by the County Council, Skandia became official sponsor of the event.

Join in the fun - The event is open to amateur sailors as well as Olympic and World Champions. The eight-day racing programme offers something for people from all walks of life, ages and abilities. If you'd like to take part in the sailing, get in touch with Cowes Combined Clubs. The Notice of Regatta are published in March / April every year with an entry form for competitors.

Berthing - Berthing in Cowes during the Regatta is in high demand. It is advisable to get your berthing sorted out sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. Shepards Wharf Marina has undergone major re-development in recent years. It's now a vibrant venue and home to a crew bar, restaurant, trading village and nightclub during Skandia Cowes Week. For those wanting a quieter berthing alternative during Skandia Cowes Week, the re-developed marina in East Cowes, with new 'Club Style' facilities, is another option. If you do not require a walk ashore facility, there are a number of options within the harbour. Swinging Moorings in Cowes Roads or pontoons south of the chain ferry are both available via Cowes Harbour Commission.

Not just for sailors - As well as competitive sailing, Skandia Cowes Week has provided entertainment for the 100,000 tourists from around the world who flock to the Isle of Wight every year for this event. Over the years the regatta has been visited by royalty and world-famous celebrities as well as naval warships, super yachts and square-riggers. Each class is made up using the IRC (International Rating System) which ranks the yachts' individual measurements. Class Zero has the biggest boats (up to 30 metres long) and Class Seven, the smallest.

Party time - Why not soak up the Solent sun and the party atmosphere and enjoy the parties and live entertainment. With plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from, Cowes Week provides carnival entertainment for everyone. If you are not planning to sail there is plenty to do during the day as well as at night. The High Street has a wide choice of art galleries, antiques, clothing and gift. A spectacular firework display on the Friday evening is watched by tens of thousands of people from the shore and from hundreds of boats off the sea front.

Getting there - For visitors from abroad, the nearest airports are either Eastleigh (Southampton) or Hurn (Bournemouth) but all of the London airports are within easy reach by taxi or train. There is also a heliport (tel. +44(0) 1983 280909) in Cowes especially for the regatta. There are regular ferries to and from the Island and even during Skandia Cowes Week there is no need to book as a foot passenger. However, if you plan to bring a car to the Island (remember that parking at Cowes is very limited), then bookings are essential.

Many more boating articles are available from TheYachtMarket.com in addition to listings of many thousands of boats for sale and charter world-wide.

Log home ideal lodging for Leavenworth's Bavarian Village

Log home ideal lodging for Leavenworth's Bavarian Village

If you're like us and have been captivated by the modern log homes you've seen in those glossy magazines, be comforted in the fact that you don't actually have to build a log home to enjoy it on your next vacation. Just rent one for the week, or week-end for that matter.

On our most recent trip to Leavenworth, Washington, we did just that when we rented a place called "Log Haven" that certainly qualified for prominent display in any magazine on log homes. It wasn't a sprawling house that almost looks out of place in the wild, but rather a classic two-bedroom log home that is really more of a log cabin. It was just the right size for a long-planned "Boys Weekend" bringing together four old high-school and college friends for a fun few days of relaxation and reminiscing.

Log Haven also is perfectly suited to a family getaway with sleeping accommodations for up to seven people. And, unlike some lodgings so impeccably designed and decorated, children are welcome. Dogs and cigarettes, however, need to be left behind.

This little piece of log heaven is situated about three miles outside of Leavenworth, known far and wide as the Bavarian Village because of its Bavarian-themed shops and restaurants, all nestled in a little valley bordered on the west by steep mountains that look like they could have been brought here from the European Alps. Log Haven is just a short drive along winding country roads that snake through the colorful Cascade Mountain foothills just east of Leavenworth.

Arriving at this log home you are immediately drawn to the spacious outdoor deck that looks out onto the picture-postcard mountains to the south and east. One could almost envision Julie Andrews and the children running through the meadows and flower gardens in this sparsely populated countryside with the helicopter swooping down for the opening panorama you see in Sound of Music. Okay, maybe it's not that gorgeous, but you get the general idea.

Our friends were certainly impressed. Log Haven may look like a big cabin but it's like a complete vacation home inside with a full kitchen, two bathrooms, large living room area — with wide-screen high-def TV — and even a laundry facility. The upstairs loft has two beds and is large enough that someone could roll out a sleeping bag on the floor and no one would need to step on anybody. Cathedral ceilings and top-to-bottom windows make this home feel bigger than it actually is.

Out on the deck are some chairs to just gaze away at the unbelievable mountain views or, if you prefer, there is a four-person hot tub — which, incidentally, got quite a work-out while we were visiting Log Haven. A propane barbecue also is on the deck so that you don't even need to take your eyes off those mountains while you're cooking.

Of course, there's no need to cook if you don't want to. Leavenworth has dozens of restaurants offering quite a variety of cuisines. Chief among those, as you might expect, is German or Bavarian food and you can't go too far in this place without being offered a bratwurst or a beer. We had both at Gustav's, the place with perhaps the best view of the mountains from its outside deck and, just as important, 25 beers on tap. Another of our favorite stops was Munchen Haus, a real beer garden with char-grilled brats and sausages, German beer on tap and a festive atmosphere. It's like a tiny little piece of the Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, which we did get a chance to experience several years ago.

What would a Boys Weekend be without barbecue, so we also drove just a few miles east to Cashmere where we had heard Country Boys Southern Style Barbecue was worth a visit. In our opinion it certainly was — scrumptious pulled pork, chicken and ribs served up hot and fresh with a choice of indoor or outdoor seating.

While we have no doubt a Girls Weekend would have been consumed by scouring the many shops in Leavenworth's compact downtown area, we studiously avoided them with one exception — when we had a craving for ice cream we had to go in one or two shops to find the soda fountain where we could get our ice cream cones. Oh, and we did take inventory of the bakeries in town — of which there are several — and took a few of their delights back to Log Haven with us.

Having grown up in Central Washington, we also knew that the Icicle River Valley affords good fishing and hiking and is simply a pleasant drive deep into the Alpine wilderness or "Enchantments" as these mountains are called. All of this is just a few miles from downtown Leavenworth so you can be as active as you want when you visit this part of Washington State. It's important to understand that Leavenworth is not just about Bavarian-themed shops and food; it's a highly prized recreation area that was used extensively by North Central Washington residents long before Leavenworth City Fathers decided to invite the world to see it with their first themed buildings back in the 1960's.

Another short diversion from Leavenworth is a trip down to Wenatchee, about 30 miles away and the place where Western and Eastern Washington meet head-on. The forests and mountains of Western Washington dramatically give way to the more arid climate and flatlands of the Columbia Plateau just to the east of the Columbia River. Located at the confluence of the Columbia and Wenatchee rivers, Wenatchee is famous for its springtime Apple Blossom Festival, and the city has grown up in recent years to offer a good selection of restaurants and other visitor services. The success of the city's Convention Center is testament to the popularity of this small city.

Also within easy driving distance — perhaps an hour, 15 minutes from Leavenworth — is famous Lake Chelan, 50-plus miles long and well worth visiting. The Lady of the Lake will take you the length of the lake to Stehekin where you are surrounded by the Cascade Mountains. Only accessible by boat or plane, Stehekin is a tiny village that is probably one of the most remote communities in all of Washington State.

But this particular trip for us was more about renewing past friendships in a beautiful environment that required little of us in terms of planning or exertion. Our Boys Weekend was a go-with-the-flow experience that often meant just relaxing in front of the Log Haven fireplace and enjoying a game of Scrabble. Or it was as simple as sitting back on that big deck and watching a few wispy clouds float along toward the mountains across the bright blue sky, so common in Central Washington during spring and summer months. It was about good conversation and stories of our youth, our families — and, in fact, our lives.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Leavenworth is in North Central Washington on Highway 2 just as it emerges from Cascade Mountains.

WHAT: Leavenworth was once a small town looking for a way to re-vitalize itself so, in the 1960's, Town Fathers came up with a plan to change the motif of downtown buildings to resemble a Bavarian Village. Today, the city is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Washington State.

WHEN: Any time of the year, although book well in advance for summer. Also, the seasons change dramatically in Leavenworth with four distinct seasons, including cold winters with plenty of snow — not unlike Bavaria.

WHY: Leavenworth offers charming shops, restaurants, several upscale lodgings and, of course, gorgeous scenery. The area is known for its recreation and Leavenworth is an ideal base of operations for daytrips to nearby places like Wenatchee, Lake Chelan or Lake Wenatchee to the west.

HOW: For more information on renting a cabin or vacation home in the Leavenworth area, contact Destination Leavenworth at 509-548-4320 or visit them on the web at www.destinationleavenworth.com. Log Haven is one of the more upscale rentals they offer and costs around $300 a night. Note that pets aren't allowed and, interestingly, smoking is not permitted even on the grounds. For more information on the Leavenworth area, contact the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce at 509-548-5807 or visit www.leavenworth.org.

Coronado Island -- where it all comes together

Coronado Island -- where it all comes together

If there is one place where Southern California charm, history, style, beaches and sun all converge, it has to be on the 7.4 square miles of ground you'll find at the west end of the sweeping, skyscraper-high Coronado Bridge. The makers of the movie "Some like it Hot" were certainly onto something when Coronado Island was selected for that movie's locale. Overlooking the Coronado beach

Just 2.3 miles across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado Island is an island retreat in every sense you can imagine - it's still relatively quiet, studded with swaying palm trees, blessed with some of the best beaches in California, and adorned by some of the most magnificent and historic buildings in San Diego County.

But lest you think this sounds like a great place to live as well, be assured that the price of admission will keep out all but the most well-heeled - unless of course you're willing to live on bread and water while you make mortgage payments so high they each could buy a late-model car.

But that's why it's so fun to visit Coronado. It's like appearing in your own episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," if only for a few days at a time. Stroll through the famous Hotel del Coronado and marvel at fine jewelry and designer clothing, or visit the fashionable downtown boutiques and trendy restaurants. Sit at an outdoor café and people-watch to your heart's content, carefully distinguishing between the everyday tourists and the tony CEO's, families in tow, everybody stylized to the hilt.

No question, the grand dame of Coronado is the Hotel del Coronado and this island's life simply revolves around that property. No one comes to the island without paying homage to the hotel, meandering through its bars and lobbies and garden pathways and then stepping out onto one of the broadest beaches in all of California. There are constant reminders that, yes, this was the filming location for "Some like it Hot" and, yes, Marilyn Monroe once stood right where you are standing. Even some of Ms. Monroe's more tasteful pin-up photos are displayed at the hotel's entrance.

But surprisingly, the "Hotel del" as locals Hotel del Coronado entrace call it, is not the only game in town and, whether because of price or a desire not to be staying smack in the middle of all the activity, many visitors opt for one of several other lodging options on the island. Our stay at the Glorietta Bay Inn was quite a different experience from the Hotel del, even though the grand dame is located right across the street.

Staying at the Glorietta Bay Inn was an opportunity to experience a historic San Diego mansion - the one that was built by John Dietrich Spreckels, a figure well-known in the city as someone who played a key role in developing San Diego during the late 1800's and after the turn of the century. He bought the utility company, street car system, water company and eventually he controlled even the Hotel del Coronado. Visitors to San Diego's Balboa Park will recognize the name from the famous Spreckels Pavilion, where visitors attend concerts given on the very organ Spreckels gave to the park when it was opened during the 1915 Pan-American Exposition.

The mansion itself is an impressive piece of architecture - Italian Renaissance style, all white, multi-story with dramatic lines. Inside, the wide marble staircase was our pathway to Room 126 - the Albright Room, a spacious second-floor with an open, airy feel and views to the yacht harbor, the Coronado Bridge and, in the distance, the mountains east of San Diego. Decorated in a French Country motif, the room featured flowers, tasteful paintings and floral bed quilts with matching drapes. Almost the size of a suite, this room was furnished with classic furniture reproductions befitting the era in which the house was built.

Downstairs, the Glorietta Bay Inn features a music room, with grand piano, in which guests can enjoy their complimentary breakfast of pastries, cereal, breads and juices. There are other areas, as well, that are quiet pleasant to sit in and enjoy the inn's colorful surroundings. The inn is quick to put a visitor in just the right mood to enjoy the island's many amenities and natural attractions.

The beach is just across the street from the Glorietta Bay Inn and it's easy to see that tourists consider this one of the best places anywhere to enjoy those famous California beach vacations. If you follow Orange Avenue just a few steps east, there is the downtown business area. The road curves ever-so-gently through the business district, Hotel Del Coronado as seen from the beachnever seeming too urban or commercial because the avenue is bisected by a wide lawn. Mature palm trees grace both sides of the thoroughfare giving a natural feeling to what otherwise might be just an ordinary business district. Of course there's nothing ordinary about the many historic buildings along meandering Orange Avenue.

The visitor notices an interesting mix of businesses downtown - exclusive upscale boutiques and fine jewelry stores are side-by-side with surf shops and tourist tee-shirt stores. Over at Beach Grill and Deli, local island style is conveyed through porcelain statue-like creation that has the menu on a surfboard, and a 50's roller-skating carhop pointing the way. Next door, the Moo-Time Creamery has the same sort of curiosities, in this case fashioned after Elvis and a cow. But just across the street is a store with a zillion-dollar assortment of jewels even Robin Leach would be hard-pressed to afford.

Restaurants are plentiful, although a word to the wise about a place we visited called Miguel's. Apparently the word is out that this is good Mexican food because we showed up at 7 p.m Thursday to find a one-hour wait time before we could even be seated. We toughed it out and the food was good - but we're not sure it was that good.

If you're driving to the island - and most people do, whether they have a rental car or they drove in from someplace in California - it's well worth exploring the entire island. The Silver Strand beach area goes on for miles. The east side of the island is the ferry landing area where there is a shopping center, restaurants and a quick boat ride to downtown San Diego.

It's also fun to look at the beautiful homes. Truth be told, many of the homes are nothing special - except in price. Ordinary, average, no-view two- and three-bedroom homes sell easily in the millions. There may be nice condos for under a million dollars but the really good ones with the views are well above that. Folks could sell sprawling estates back in the Midwest and be able to afford only a tiny fixer-upper on this island.

Even if you don't have a car, there are many other ways to explore Coronado. For example, Coronado Pedicab Tours offers 30 and Coronado Pier 60-minute tours to view all of the island sights. Another option is a "vintage motor tour" that takes guests around Coronado in a 1965 Volkswagen Microbus. Of, if you want some exercise, there are several walking tours including one that leaves right from the Glorietta Bay Inn and focuses on all of the local historic areas.

The island includes many attractions. For example, the Museum of History and Art showcases the island's early history, with special attention given to the military bases that have called the island home. Theater is a big part of the local entertainment scene and visitors can enjoy performances at the Coronado Community Theater and the Lamb's Player's Theatre. Art-lovers will enjoy the Art-in-the-park exhibition put on the first and third Sundays of each month.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Coronado Island is part of San Diego and is easily reached by taking a toll-free bridge just south of downtown. Many people consider a stay on the island the ultimate Southern California vacation.

WHAT: An island retreat that has the best that California has to offer.

WHEN: San Diego weather is the best in the country and you can expect moderate temperatures year-round.

WHY: A great opportunity to enjoy another way of life for a few days while soaking up Southern California sunshine and culture. Those looking for the ultimate in California beach vacations will find that the beach near Hotel del is rated the best in all of California.

HOW: For more information on Coronado, go to Coronado Visitor Center or phone (619) 437-8788. To learn more about the Glorietta Bay Inn, visit www.gloriettabayinn.com or phone (619) 435-3101.

1. First of all you should be flexible with your travel dates. Sometimes, if you are determined to travel on a specific date, you may end up paying more.

2. If you can manage to leave a day earlier or later, you can often get a cheaper fare.

3. If you are booking an international flight, you should book at least 30 days in advance, this way you may be able to obtain a lower fare.

9. Although it is sometimes unavoidable, try to avoid departing in the school and public holiday dates. Attractiveness of Hawaii's Ko Olina Is Increasing

Attractiveness of Hawaii's Ko Olina Is Increasing

Sophisticated travelers who frequent Hawaii have long realized that the real action in Oahu is not in Waikiki or Honolulu but rather to the west, in the Ko Olina region. Decades in the making, Ko Olina is typically considered Hawaii's most luxurious resort destination. In fact, it was historically known as the playground of Hawaiian royalty.

Recent developments in Summer of 2008 are going to make this area even more appealing for travel enthusiasts. This article discusses some of the important tourism related trends that may be of interest to Oahu vacationers.

Despite the economic problems touching most of the mainland, the Ko Olina Oahu area is seeing a healthy upswing in new activity. For instance, the State of Hawaii has announced an agreement to bring Oahu's largest shopping center west of the famed Pearl Ridge community. The shopping development is being located between Ewa and Kapolei.

Known as Ka Makana Ali'i, the shopping center will have approximately one and a half million square feet of commercial square footage. Also, the plans will allow up to 300 more hotel rooms and up to one hundred thousand feet of office space.

Situated on the Kapolei Parkway and the upcoming North-South access road, access for tourists will be convenient. Moreover, the extra jobs in the area will be a boon to the Island's economy generally. Some tourist officials believe the new center will help bring several thousand jobs for Hawaii.

Also, several smaller shopping centers are also planned for the community including the Laulani Village in Ewa and Kapolei Commons in West Kapolei. Ko Olina visitors already benefit from the good proximity of quite a few well known retail establishments.

The greater area benefited by the new shopping facilities is home to an extensive variety of upscale condos, many priced in the seven figures. For instance, the brand new Ko Olina Beach Villas front the ocean and beach lagoons. Other resort properties include the Mariott Ihilani and the Marriott Timeshare complexes, both of which are beach front properties.

These properties enjoy a temperate year round climate as well as a range of amenities such as championship golf, spas, and lap-pool type lagoons. The tranquil lagoons make the destination particularly appealing to families with small children. The adults typically wade into the rough of the open ocean while the kids remain in the safer lagoon waters.

Also benefiting from the shopping expansion will be the Ko Olina Beach Villas property mentioned earlier. Residents will likely prefer to shop at Ka Makana rather than driving all the way back to Waikiki.

Andy Denis has been visiting the KoOlina area for almost twenty years. He has commented on a variety of occasions on Hawaiian travel topics.

The Top Ski Resorts in France

The Top Ski Resorts in France

French Ski Resorts

The most famous ski resort in the French Alps is Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. Chamonix is both the oldest and the biggest French winter-sports resort. Site of the first Winter Olympics, held in 1924, Chamonix boasts the world's highest cable car (12,000 feet). From the top, the view of Mont Blanc, at 15,700 feet, is stunning.

Visitors to Chamonix can do more than ski, though. There are conferences, a science fair, fishing and hunting, various music and folk festivals, and an alpine museum. An 18-hole golf course will delight golfers, and three movie theaters provide enough viewing entertainment for even the dedicated film buff. Five dancing spots, or discotheques, will keep the under-30 entertained, while the health-conscious adventurer can indulge in day-sports like cycling, mountain climbing, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, tennis and ice skating.

Chamonix is part of the Ski Pass Mont Blanc Area, and provides access to more than 140 individual pistes, or dedicated ski runs covering more than 94 miles. A dedicated Ski Pass will provide access not only to Chamonix, but Argentière, Combloux, Cordon, Le Tour, Les Contamines, Les Houches, Megève, Passy Plaine Joux and St. Gervais Mont-Blanc as well. A good portion of the dedicated runs are above 8,200 feet, so year-round skiing is guaranteed. Chamonix also has 54 snow machines to provide adequate base and good terrain, and 49 lifts capable of transporting more than 52,000 passengers per hour.

Megève is built around a medieval heart, but boasts the kinds of amenities all travelers and ski enthusiasts will appreciate. Expensive and stylish, Megève was built in the 1920's as a resort alternative to St. Moritz, and has continued to upgrade and attract discerning travelers ever since. Fortunately, you won't need star status to enjoy one of the luxurious hotels or chalets, though you will need a sizeable vacation fund; Megève is not cheap.

The ski area, 185 miles of marked trails, has 81 integrated lifts - no T-bars for luxurious Megève. If you get there in the right year, you may even be able to witness a World Cup race, hosted on a regular basis (Chamonix was the site of the 2007-2008 race). If you get off on snowboarding, Megève also has two snow parks and a half-pipe (for the unfamiliar, think of a skateboarding park with snow). Megève gets 80 inches of snow a year, making for good to very-good base, and supplements Nature with 175 snow-making machines. Méribel, located in the center of the Three Valleys (the biggest, linked winter sports area in the world), has 200 lifts and 372 miles of dedicated trails.

Méribel used to be an intermediate site, but opening up Mont Vallon and the top of the valley have made it a destination-must for extreme skiers as well. The wooden chalets, many owned by British tourists who favor the ski slopes, are tastefully rustic, the language more often English than French.

Morzine has easy road access, and is ideal for beginning skiers. Its gently inclined, tree-filled slopes and pleasant atmosphere are non-threatening to those unfamiliar with French customs, cuisine, or skiing. The weather is also typically mild - no need to worry about getting lost in a snowstorm. The one drawback to Morzine is its non-central location and lack of adequate transportation to other ski sites. Morzine makes snow, but not in sufficient quantity to overcome localized snow conditions, which can be disappointing. This makes it ideal for cautious beginners, but a bummer for more advanced skiers, who would prefer Serre Chevalier, with its 50 runs designed specifically for advanced or expert skiers.

An unforgettable holiday in Dubai

An unforgettable holiday in Dubai
Copyright © 2008 Paul Ingersole

Dubai is becoming one of the trendiest places to vacation in. even though most of the people mention only Dubai, the area is actually consisting of two cities, Dubai and Deira, which are divided by the Creek. People visit Dubai for different reasons that range from shopping sessions to the perfect exotic vacation.

However, no matter of your reasons of visiting and spending some time in Dubai, the emirate offers so many activities, things to do and entertainment that it is almost impossible to get bored. One thing to keep in mind before flying to Dubai is the visa requirement. Most of the countries need visas to enter Dubai. There are several ways to get a tourism entry visa that is valid for a month and can be renewed once. You can get a visa through your travel agent if your holiday is an organized one or if you are visiting Dubai on your own you can get it at the airport. Even though the official language is Arabic, English is widely used, so you do not have to worry about not being understood. The money is called Emirati Dirham (AED) and there are several exchanges offices all over the city.

Out of the wide variety of things to do available in Dubai there are several musts you have to do while on holiday here. You have to experience a camel ride and see a camel racing. If you want to go in a safari there are several tours and options available you can select a Wadi driving, a Dune driving, a Sand Skiing safari or a Deserts Feasts safari. Dubai is the place to find out about Arabian culture and bring a lot of your Arabian dreams to life. For example you can sleep in an authentic Bedouin tent or paint your own canvas in some of the galleries open for the public; you can try the traditional food and visit museums and other places with astonishing architecture. Since Dubai is a very fast developing place, the architecture is mixed and if in some parts you can see the old traditional buildings made in the Arabic style, in the resorts and even downtown you can see modern architecture and buildings made following the newest trends in architecture.

If you are visiting Dubai with your children consider one of the available theme park like Magic Planet, Wonderland or Wild Widi or going to the beach. If you want to have an adrenaline rush you can try one of the available aerial tours or the creek tours which offer an unforgettable view of Dubai. If your want to go shopping during your holiday Dubai is the place to do it because there are several major shopping centers in the area and you can find things for all types of budgets. For sport lovers the choices are the go carting, the horse riding, thunder bowling, ice skating, golf, fishing and lot and lots of walks on the beaches.

Accommodation and dining is also available according to your budget. You can select a cheaper, a mid range or a luxury hotel where you can pay anywhere from $70 to over $700 a night. If the main goal of your holiday is to get rest and be pampered than the perfect accommodation for you will be in a luxury hotel. However if you are there for a fun holiday and for getting to see as much as possible from the region than you can find inexpensive accommodation and save some of that money to spend it sightseeing. The most visited places are the Dubai Creek, the Dubai museum, the Archaeological sites, the Dubai World Trade Center, the Grand Mosque, and the Hatta mountains. Just because Dubai is in the desert area with a sub-tropical climate, you should make sure you pack some warm clothing for the evenings when it can get quite chillier.

Dubai is one of the most interesting holiday spots because of the available activities and different ways of spending your time, because of the high contrast between the Old Dubai and the New Modern Dubai, the prices that are adjusted for all the budgets and the multitude of interesting places to see. For example Dubai is the home of the only seven-star hotel in the world, the Burj al-Arab hotel. Also in Dubai you can see and visit the tallest building in the world, the Burj Dubai and the Palm Islands which are the three biggest man-made islands in the world. Because of its on growing popularity and the insufficient accommodation, Dubai tends to become a holiday place for people with medium income who can afford to pay an average of $200 per night per room. Nonetheless the ever expanding area is still one of the top holiday places.

Arizona Wonders

Arizona Wonders

With so many things to do and see, it's no wonder why there are so many Arizona wonders (no pun intended!) and why so many people flock to the state of Arizona.

Why do so many people travel to Arizona and why do so many people continue to move there? There may be many reasons why people travel and move to this state. Certainly many of these folks who have made the permanent move will tell you that the weather was a big reason why they chose the desert.

The weather alone is a key attractant as virtually every day, any desired activity is possible. The Arizona winters draw mostly Canadians, Midwesterners, as well as other people from other states and countries.

While there may be many who really do not enjoy the extreme heat in the summer months, many of those same people will tell you that they would much rather deal with heat than the long bitterly cold weather that they have had to live with for so long.

I heard someone say once that there are three different types of seasons in Arizona: "cool, perfect, and really, really hot," which likely explains why many of the winter visitors scurry back home to avoid the intense summer heat of the desert.

So, just what are the wonders of Arizona anyway? Many people consider Northern Arizona, namely the Grand Canyon and the gorgeous red rocks of Sedona, reason enough to consider this the Arizona wonders.

This area is considered sacred to many, especially the Native Americans who truly treasure the red rocks that include Flagstaff's forested mountains.

And if you think that lakes do not exist in Arizona, guess again, because the state has plenty of lakes and rivers.

One of the Arizona attractions are Lake Powell that offer many water enthusiasts only the finest in fishing with beautiful blue waters that compliment the Sonoran desert and the sandstone in the area of Northern Arizona.

In addition to the never ending beautiful scenery that encompasses the northern Arizona region, there is also a very famous historic route known as the Mother Road, more commonly referred to as Route 66.

While passing through the northern region you will take in and hopefully will be able to have the opportunity to explore the Native American cultures and mountainous areas that are so prominent throughout the entire state. Pottery, jewelery, blankets, and so much more are available to anyone as you will find many shops and special events that display these and many other Native American gems.

If you plan on traveling to the Tucson or other southern areas within the state, you will certainly discover many more Arizona wonders, too.

Natural wonders such as the history, beautiful stretching mountains, Native American, and cowboy culture won't be hard to find. In fact, many famous actors have made their mark in Arizona filming some of the most famous old-western movies. If you enjoy rodeos and the like, you will have many opportunities to experience that as well.

Within the Tucson area, you will find that there are many Arizona attractions that offer not only the wild, wild, west scene, but plenty of luxurious golf courses and resorts to choose from.

This region is very popular to the many winter visitors who love to take in a spring-time cactus league baseball game as many teams travel to the desert for spring training.

If you enjoy the stars or birds, this state is a great choice for those who like to experience the astronomical observatories and the long list of birds that make Arizona their home. This state is also quite famous for those who enjoy the many birding sites that exist.

The capital, Phoenix, is very popular for both visitors and residents who enjoy the city life. The surrounding areas offer many more beautiful golf courses, museums, resorts, and an endless supply of the Sonoran desert and mountainous areas. In fact, if you like hiking, hiking Camelback Mountain is a favorite activity for both visitors and residents alike.

The area of central Arizona which includes Phoenix, now has more than three million residents which continues to grow and grow with each year, but don't worry as there is plenty of space to move around. You will not feel too cramped as there is more than two-thousand square miles to roam around in with a wide variety of events that attract people from everywhere.

Plenty of malls, including swap meets, or what many call flea markets, are loved by many because of the great deals that can be found.

Whether it is the night life, spas, hiking, fine dining, or the boating or golfing experience, the desert southwest seems to be the area that offers so many choices to everyone.

A Quick Tour Of Italy - Palermo, Sicily

A Quick Tour Of Italy - Palermo, Sicily

If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the island of Sicily, a region of southern Italy. Depending on your interests, this beautiful area can be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food, and wash it down with fine local wine. And parts of Sicily haven't yet been discovered by tourists. This article presents Sicily's capital, Palermo. Companion articles present western Sicily and eastern Sicily.

Palermo is Sicily's capital and largest city with a population of about 700,000. It was founded in the Eighth Century B. C. by the Phoenicians who wanted to take advantage of its natural harbor. This strategically situated city was conquered again and again. For example, it was once a Muslim city with two or three hundred Mosques. The period of the Norman occupation starting in 1072 and lasting for well over one hundred years was considered Palermo's golden age. The conquests continued almost unabated. Palermo was heavily destroyed during the Second World War. To some extent Palermo is still in the hands of a conqueror, the Mafia.

Start at the Cathedral, built in 1185 on the site of a Byzantine basilica transformed into a mosque by the Saracens in the Ninth Century. Other historic churches worth visiting include San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi, San Giovanni degli Eremiti, and the Greek Orthodox church La Martorana. Many churches and other buildings are situated in or near beautiful parks.

The Teatro Massimo (Great Theater) is Italy's largest opera house. The movie Godfather Part III included a famous scene, violent of course, that occurred on the Teatro's steps.

The Palazzo Reale was the seat of government for centuries. It is now the home of the Sicilian Parliament. The Palatine Chapel was the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily. Its mosaics are well worth seeing. The building and its furnishings are a great combination of Arabic, Byzantine, and Norman styles.

Make sure to see the Salinas Regional Museum of Archeology with its prehistoric cave drawings. Then for a change of pace visit the Museo delle Marionette many of whose marionettes are hundreds of years old.

Finish your tour at the Piazza Pretoria (Pretoria Square). The fountain dominating the square contains hundreds of sculptures whose lack of clothing led to the name, "Fountain of Shame". We suggest that you see this square at night.

Sicily has always adapted foreign foods to come up with Sicilian versions. Put all the foreign influences together and you have the unique Sicilian cuisine. See our companion article I Love Touring Italy - Palermo, Sicily for a sample menu and more information on local wines as well as an in-depth examination of its tourist attractions. Marsala DOC, first exported to England well over two hundred years ago, is Sicily's best-known wine. Most Marsalas are sweet; some are great, others are not.

Levi Reiss has authored alone or with a co-author ten computer and Internet books, but to tell the truth, he would really rather just drink fine French, German, or other wine, accompanied by the right foods. He knows what dieting is, and is glad that for the time being he can eat and drink what he wants, in moderation. He teaches classes in computers at an Ontario French-language community college. Visit his Italian travel, wine, and food website http://www.travelitalytravel.com/ and his global wine website http://www.theworldwidewine.com/.

California Delta is water recreation paradise

California Delta is water recreation paradise

First-time California visitors traveling southbound on the freeway sometimes are taken aback when, just about the time they reach Stockton, they see a big ocean-going freighter that seems a little like a whale swimming in your local river. After driving hundreds of miles down California's hot, dry interior, it just doesn't compute that there should be a ship anywhere even close.

Yet ships do call on Stockton - and have for decades - as they make their way to the state's interior through an intricate set of waterways sometimes called the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta or the Sacramento Delta, or just the California Delta. The point is it's a delta not unlike what you see in the Deep South and, in fact, there are some surprising connections between Louisiana and the California Delta. Anyone who has visited Isleton for its famous Crawdad Festival can testify to that.

It's also eerily similar to the rural roads and towns near New Orleans where levees keep the river from flooding the countryside. In this case it's not the Mississippi that you worry about but the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers that creates a water system carrying 47 percent of California's water runoff. Most of the land of the inner Delta is under sea level, generally between 21 and three feet below.

Parched residents of California's San Joaquin Valley are not about to let all that water go to waste and so what has developed over the decades is a vibrant water recreation area with dozens of marinas, interesting small towns and a network of canals, roads and bridges that makes visitors in this part of the state almost entirely dependent on GPS devices -- or at least a good set of old-fashioned road maps.

The Delta region is comprised of 738,000 acres in six counties, so you could seemingly wander around in there for years without finding a way out. That's especially true if you're navigating a houseboat - as we once did - where relying on your navigation charts is the only way to be sure you'll ever be heard from again.

But that, of course, is the appeal of the California Delta. For those visitors with a little wanderlust, it's easy to get to the Delta from the San Francisco Bay area. After all, one of the Delta's largest cities, Antioch, is comprised largely of people who live in the Delta region and commute daily to San Francisco. From there you just cross a bridge and all of a sudden you're driving on lonely two-lane roads skirting the canals and levees, turning every which way until, voila, there's another little town to explore and check off your list.

On our most recent trip to the Delta we decided we'd spend the night in some rather unusual "waterfront" accommodations: a 40-foot Bluewater yacht with its own dock, located at the confluence of Georgiana Slough and the Mokelumne River. The Dockside Boatel has an Isleton address, but this is one of the places you'll want to call for directions. The owner will be happy to give them to you and will be there to greet you because she lives in a house just a few yards onshore from the dock.

This was a great base of operations for forays into the Delta region and an excellent choice if you love being dockside and enjoy the sounds and slight wave action of the water. We had the dock to ourselves and there are two chairs on the dock perfect for fishing, reading the paper, watching the sunset or just overall taking in the sights and sounds of the Delta tributaries.

A 40-foot boat is a good-sized boat and a chance for non-boaters to sample what it would be like to have a large boat for regular getaways. You're not going to drive this boat anywhere because it's being rented as a floating bed-and-breakfast inn, but it's no more costly than staying in a room at someone's home. The boat has a parlor area, a galley (kitchen), a stateroom with two beds down below, a head (bathroom), and plenty of space out on the aft deck for sitting. (Special note to landlubbers: as boaters know, heads can be a little temperamental and this one is no exception).

Breakfast is delivered to your door at whatever time you prefer, and ours was a well-prepared hearty combination of French toast, sausage, eggs and two kinds of juices. We were impressed with the quantity of food for what we considered a nominal nightly rental rate. Lower priced B and B's are more apt to give you a cinnamon roll and send you on your way.

While there are several small towns within easy driving distance, we especially enjoyed Isleton, where you do start to get the connection with Louisiana. We're told that Louisiana residents actually do come here to live and they seem to bring some of that Cajun spice right along with them. Check out the crawdads served at Isleton Joe's or Ernie's or, better yet, plan your trip for the Crawdad Festival each June. While you can catch crawdads in the Delta, thousands of crawdads are shipped in from Louisiana -- pre-spiced -- for the festival.

We drove many backroads in the Delta where we found numerous marinas, each with a restaurant and some variation of waterfront dining. There were state parks where it was easy to pull off and find a canal-front location to have a picnic. There were draw bridges that were great for photos. And t was fun to see the many variations of boats plying the inland waterways during our visit, including a 19th Century sailing ship that was offering rides from the Antioch Marina.

If you drive along Highway 60, you'll encounter several different towns - Isleton, Rio Vista, Locke, Walnut Grove and Ryde - which will each give you a taste of life in the Delta region and of the history that created this unusual destination. Check out the restored Ryde Hotel, just south of Walnut Grove where you can almost hear the voices of the party-goers who once traveled here by sternwheeler. Or stop by Rio Vista, considered the biggest town in these parts with 5,000 people. This is Bass-fishing Central where the annual Bass Festival attracts 35,000.

We couldn't leave the Delta without getting on a boat - a boat that actually moves, that is - so we dropped by H2O to Go Boat Rentals, located between the cities of Rio Vista and Lodi and rented our own 17-foot runabout for a couple of hours. This was a late-model (almost new, in fact) bowrider that sped us to several locations along the Delta waterways giving us an entirely new perspective of the Delta. Sure enough, we came upon one of those ocean freighters that was headed into Stockton. It was time again to freak out a few more of those travelers headed down the interstate.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: The California Delta is generally located between Sacramento and Stockton and then southwest to Antioch or northwest to Suisun Bay. It's easily accessed from all of those areas.

WHAT: The California Delta is where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers converge to take runoff waters from the Central Valley through a channel to San Francisco Bay and then out to the Pacific Ocean. The area has several natural and man-made channels (or sloughs) that have the combined effect of creating a series of islands. The earthen levees in the area have allowed extensive farming throughout the Delta and boating in the Delta area feels like you are driving your boat through farmlands.

WHEN: Boating is best in the summer months, but a temperate climate allows recreation and travel in this area any time of the year.

WHY: The Delta's waterways are fun to explore and the variety of towns, marinas, parks, lodgings and unique down-home restaurants adds to the overall appeal.

HOW: For more information on the Delta, contact the California Delta Chambers and Visitors Bureau at www.californiadelta.org or phone (916) 777-4041. For more information on the Delta's Dockside Boatel, go to www.deltadocksideboatel.com or phone 510-919-2197. Cheap Maui Vacations

Cheap Maui Vacations

Surveys have shown that the two most visited islands in the US are Maui and Hawaii. You can either take the word of those who have gone there, or see for yourself by planning your next great vacation in Maui.

As one of the Hawaiian islands, Maui is often called the "Valley Isle" because of it's location between two volcanoes. It is the second largest of Hawaii's eight islands and has many tropical rain forests, pristine beaches, clear waters, green pasture and rocky cliffs.

The island is a great place to visit throughout the year, as the weather stays a comfortable 75 to 85 degrees all year round. If you are interested in spending your next vacation here, try booking online or visit a travel agent. This would certainly be a memorable vacation and be sure to bring back lots of souvenirs and pictures.

Tourists can stay either at the western or eastern side of the island. The western side is the biggest tourist destination and where most of the resorts are located, in the towns of Lahaina, Kaanapali and Kapalua. However, if you want to avoid the crowds, try the east side where you can trek through the rainforest, see waterfalls and cross over land bridges.

How can you start your tour in Maui? Well, you can probably start by hopping on board the Sugar Cane Train in Kaanapali and relax in an open-air coach while visiting the historic town of Lahaina. You could then snorkel at Wailea Beach or relax in its waters and see the black lava formations that mingle with the sand.

For those who don't want to swim, they can go whale watching; join a fishing cruise or a scenic sightseeing cruise. This will give the tourists the chance to learn more about the island and intermingle with other tourists.

In the evening, you can enjoy a dinner cruise with lively music and dancing in the perfect setting for a romantic evening. These boats usually depart on the west side of the island and many of these can be found in Lahaina. These cruises usually last about two and a half hours and it is recommended to arrive early.

When you return to the island, you may have a drink at the one of the open air bars or watch a fire dance. This show will surely amaze you as these individuals are able to perform their demonstration unscathed.

Before you leave, you should check out some of the art galleries. Who knows, you may find something here that you would like to buy and display in your home.

A vacation in Maui is not only for families but for couples as well who may be celebrating their honeymoon or anniversary. This provides you the option to stay at a secluded place so as to enjoy each other's company without disturbances.

This vacation in Maui may be your first, but surely this will not be your last. With the breathtaking views and the friendly people, chances are you will return again in years ahead or even recommend this place to family members and friends
